I love how what goes around comes around. Nintendo used to have a space world where they'd show pokemon gold silver and zelda pre cel shaded. But then it died, some say largely killed off by E3. E3 reigned Supreme for nearly 15-20 years, and then it too has become a shell of its former self, with many citing Nintendo's Directs paving the way for other companies to just do their own Directs independent of E3.

Nintendo got their revenge

why exactly did E3 die out when people still spend hundreds to attend anime/comic book conventions?

because devs/pubs didn't need it anymore now that streaming was way more convenient and cheaper, and going as a member of the public was shit unless you enjoy queueing for 3+ hours to play a 15 min demo.

so it was more efficient for developers to send copies to streamers than it was to invite streamers to play their demo?!

Because people stopped caring about E3 outside of the big conferences. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, EA, Ubisoft, and some others.

What most people don't realize is those conferences weren't at E3 and never were. They were held at random auditoriums NEAR E3 but they were separate events. The reason they did it that way is so that journalists could attend the conferences and then go to E3 the next day.

The the people making the conferences decided "hey, we don't need to rent out these expensive auditoriums. Let's just do it virtually."

With no conferences in LA to go to, flying out there to go to E3 in person started becoming an expensive ordeal for not a lot of benefit because aforementioned nobody cared about 90% of the E3 floor.

They tried to rectify this by opening it up to fans which made sense but then COVID hit. And many game devs can't afford floor at E3 either because of money or because of time. Add to the mix of having to compete with PAX and other cons, waning industry support, lack of journalist interest, and a lot of little things all added up to whammy E3 from all sides.

Maybe they could make a comeback but I doubt it. If I were in charge I'd consider moving the venue to the east coast. Too many video game cons are on the west coast. Being in the east might attract a new audience who doesn't want to travel to the west.

Because companies don't wanna deal with ESA's bullshit anymore.

E3 was never meant to be the public spectacle it later became.

Space World was a Japan-only event series.

I never was at E3, but becoming a public spectacle is the fun thing about such conventions.

I just hope that the GamesCom in Germany doesn't meet the same fate.

Seriously at this point what didn't kill E3.

The concept of pitching games to retailers to stock on their shelves isn't a thing anymore

Journalists doing super important pre- release coverage died with print media. Now there's literally hundreds of sources with their own following including just putting up their own video. Notable producers, executives and developers can just do interviews whenever.

E3 stopped doing investor presentations years ago and thank goodness

That just leaves marketing to gamers. No need to go to a showfloor for that. Most gamers online are just gonna talk about how shit each presentation was anyway.

They an even host demo events online now so don't even need a showfloor for that. Not that most major publishers are even interested in pre-release demos these days anyway. If they were they can just release them digitally.

Only thing missing is people in the industry networking. I'm sure Keighley does his thing to try and keep that happening for Summer Game Fest and the Game Awards.

Networking is a good point, how would someone even enter the industry now and how would publishers and devs get along. Lotta missed potential to find the next B-game with a modest following thats not quite AAA but not unpolished indie messes either.
