It was entertaining but even for Wes Anderson, this one was just too weird and up its own butt trying to be overly artsy farts

I did enjoy Steve Carrells character

Wes movies are special in that there are famous actors who all try to act as little as possible.

A Wes movie with the monotone dialogue erratically disrupted by Bay explosions would be something.

My fiance and I are going tomorrow. And yeah, I have heard that this may be too Wes Anderson. I felt the same way about The French Dispatch, as he seems to be parodying himself.

We also saw No Hard Feelings last night. I had some issues with the third act, but overall it was hilarious.

Seeing it tonight. I'm of the opinion there is no such thing as "too much Wes Anderson" and I loved The French Dispatch for exactly that reason. Having said that, this one looks like he's gone even further off the deep end.

I havent watched it

sometimes I cant focus on a movie if its stop motion or whatever

i do really love Kubo and the two strings tho

Isle of Dogs is good though? I saw Darjeeling, Budapest, and Moonrise Kingdom I thought they were fine I guess

Royal Tenebaums and Life Aquatic are the real gems that he has done imo

He made The Royal Tenenbaums, so I'll follow him forever.

That said, I've seen about two movies he's made total. But still...forever!!

I tried watching Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums when they came out. They did nothing for me and I lost interest in them like half way through. It killed any desire for me to watch any else he put out.

Zissou is my #8 all-time, & Asteroid City shares its joie de vivre & playfulness... yet not so much its dramatic undertones.

I thought everything about AC was great, though its Russian doll storytelling does take a moment or so to calibrate everything going on. Ed Norton & Adrien Brody playing producer & director of the televised stage play 'Asteroid City' which is the film we're watching.

Matt f'n Dillon. Jeff Goldblum in a great character role! Steve Carrell was great, he took Bill Murray's place due to availability. Most everyone is in the film, including Seu Jorge for a musical scene.

My Letterboxd mini review:

The frst 2/3 are absolutely hilarious, and then it shifts a little too strongly into more dramatic emotional territory. The emotion is mostly earned and it works but the tonal shift is too jarring. Feels like it could have all been integrated a little better. Still highly recommended because you will laugh. A lot.

3.5 stars or 7 / 10

Just got home. It started strong but felt a bit draggy about 75% thru but ended decently. Definitely on the goofy side, it didnt have me in stitches there were a few chuckles. First impression Id give it a 7.5/10. Pretty standard Anderson film.

I saw this last night. I usually love his stuff and was excited to see this one. But it left me feeling pretty much how you phrased it. I guess I just prefer his stuff that feels like it could be taking place in the real world. The Royal Tenebaums, Rushmore and Darjeeling Limited are probably my top three from Anderson. Although, that third spot isn't set in stone, it can and does change from time to time.
