A patient in his mid-70s, a man with a history of heart problems, called his wife to say that he was being discharged. When she arrived an hour later to pick him up, the doctor had the unenviable task of informing her that he was gone. He walked himself to the restroom and back, then was found twenty minutes later without a pulse. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Some inmates were sharing pictures of their families and stories of the outside. When an individual in his late 40s shared a photograph of his daughter which included his multicultural grandchildren, one of the other inmates began hurling racial slurs. Things escalated from there and the grandfather ended up catching a beating from the racist inmate and another who joined in on the assault.

I walked in on a cancer patient who was positively skeletal. Her boney hands were held above her head and she was praying. This woman should have never been left alone. She pleaded for water and, stupidly, I said I would get her nurse. This woman is so withered that should could not easily lift a cup to her mouth to drink it. Not being trained to deal with people in this condition, I was afraid of pouring too much or too little. When I sized the nurse up, I knew that she was going to do JACK FUCK about the situation, but I left her there to make a phone call in accordance with my line of work. When I came back five or six minutes later, the cancer patient was crying, "Water... Water..." in a coarse voice. Just like you see in movies. By this time I said fuck it, I'm going to do something even if I'm doing it wrong. I grabbed the cup of water that's on the counter and bring it to her, but she needed me to adjust the bed for her to sit upright to drink it. I didn't know how to adjust the beds, so I franticly searched for any nurse I can find -- eventually pulling another nurse away from a different patient. We got the patient sat upright, we got her a sponge-on-a-stick to help her drink the water in small doses. I don't know how anyone could still be alive in her condition. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I feel like I've earned a few minutes in Hell for not acting upon my instincts and helping the patient / forcing the nurse to do her job the first time around. She suffered an additional six minutes that she didn't have to. Oh, and when the patient's sister showed up, the nurse was bending over backwards to put on a show of compassion with extra pillows, extra blankets, etc.
