The key is to hoard actually useful things, not just trash like those cables you keep for years but probably already broken.

As long as I can remember I've always had a single drawer that was full of useless crap. But I never let it go beyond that one drawer.

I did as a kid, but it's more or less under control now. Scanners and paperless offerings help a ton with paper-related clutter. Also, separating things that I am using/going to use vs things I'm keeping for no particular reason, and taking pictures of the latter before getting rid of them.

My mom still has it pretty bad though. It was among the reasons that motivated me to move out.

"Normal" is a meaningless term. Lots of people do it. Whether you are "normal" or not depends on how much of a hoarder you are, and different people have different ideas of where the line is.

It sounds like you're asking whether it's bad to be a hoarder, and that depends on whether the hoarding is negatively impacting your life. If it's bugging you enough that you're asking us here, chances are the answer is yes.
