Is that the gimmick? Just make an area where it's too easy to fall off and you die constantly?

I am really enjoying Elden Ring. It's fun to play a game that actually reminds me of what I hoped Zelda would be when I was a kid. And the massive map pretty amazing the way there's just constantly more.

But this is just garbage game design. I know people who like Souls games tend to act like masochistic abuse victims, where they call things like Blight Town genius, but this isn't fun at all. Like, the game deliberately has poor platforming. Making an entire level a balancing act is stupid and makes me feel like they ran out of ideas.

Yes, they are out of ideas.

Also, try not locking on and using a claw grip so you can move freely while attacking and rotating the camera

I never played 2 because a bunch of people complained it was the worst one. It's actually one of the only newer Fromsoft games I haven't beaten.

I'm late to ER, but it's definitely an awesome game. Crap like this where you can only fight on a narrow log and you have to dodge projectiles while on one doesn't impress me though.

the actual level geometry of the haligtree is fine and even great, because once you have an understanding of the level itself it's really easy to get to anywhere you want in it.

it's fun to invade there for that reason. really easy to blast people off of edges and stuff like that.

the problem i have with it is the enemy damage scaling, which makes the dumbass zombie hollow dudes at the start do >1100 HP damage over the course of their charge against moderate armor. they're the same enemy you fought at the start of the game, just inflated.

the design of it is fine, but the way the enemies scale up from the mountaintops of giants onwards is absolutely fucked

There are certain areas in every Souls game that try to teach you discretion over valor. Poison Swamp in Demons Souls, Anor Londo archers in Dark Souls, etc. This is your time to practice discretion. Run through the trees , avoid the enemies and get to the next checkpoint asap.

Yeah that area is the one time where if somebody complains about artificial difficulty in Souls games, I'll agree with them

The game design there was to just shove an asston of really hard enemies in one small area. The lone Erdtree avatar on the wall is the easy fight which says a lot

I only picked this up now because of what a disappointment TotK is, and I had to play something good to wash the bad taste out of my brain.

Last year when ER came out I bought Sekiro instead which is IMO From's best game.

it my fave area of the game cuz it's the only place where the fodder enemies still feel kind of tough after beating the game the first time around.

After beating the game I looked up discourse on it and found out that the Haligtree and Ephraim or hwatever the city is called are extremely hated areas and I was kind of confused. Yes, they're hard, but end-game content should be hard and it never struck me as unreasonably so, except maybe the avatar with 10 or so strong units and ballistas flanking him. The boss is cancer, but the vitrol for the areas themselves doesn't strike me as deserved.

They're nowhere near as obnoxious as Frigid Outskirts or a number of areas of Dark Souls 3.

I actually did manage to make my way to the lower kingdom area where you get sucker punched by Ballista's again.

I got that far by running past everything and killing Loretta. I'm sorry, but that's a sign of bad level design, when you'd rather circumvent the gameplay and obstacles than put up with frustrating and cheap deaths, mostly based around pitfalls and deliberately bad platforming mechanics.

I just realized the level was explicitly designed to not be enjoyable. I bought Street Fighter 6, I don't have to put up with this. It was a good game, but if you're out of ideas, end things with some dignity. Don't spread yourself thin. The game insists upon itself.

I feel Sekiro requires a different skill than any other Fromsoft game. Hate to be basic about it but it taps more into the rhythm gamer than the...idk, masochistic type the other soulsborne games specialize in.

In fairness, Blighttown was sick as fuck for it's time. Elden Ring is the only other game that did their world design the same kind of way. Yeah the framerate was shit but having one area but a cornerstone of the games lore, haunting atmosphere, and a ramp up in challenge all while connecting to like 4 different places at once was sick as fuck.

Shame they ruined it with the toxic blowgun nerds but eh.

Maybe I've just got too much time in souls games overall but I don't stop to explore basically ever anymore. I get what I need in each area and just haul ass out of there. That's why 3's my favorite of the three. Most conducive to just holding W.
