It's up in the UK as well, which surprised me. I'm used to these things dropping a day later in the UK.

I just started Picard season 3. Despite the crying I like Picard and I'm a Kirk fan.

I thought that was a great episode on its own merits, but not a great season opener, if that makes sense. It feels like an odd choice to have the first episode of the season not actually feature Captain Pike, and to basically pie off the end of season cliffhanger until (at least?) the second episode.

I know that Trek is at its best when it's an ensemble show (and that Spock more of a co-lead with Pike), but it did feel weird to open the season with an episode that relegated two of the "big three" to a pre-credits cameo. The episode itself was very good, I just think that structurally they probably should have opened with whatever Pike is going to do to save Una and resolve the cliffhanger, and then had this as the second episode. It's like if DS9 had given us that cliffhanger at the end of S4, then made Looking for pa.r'Mach in All the Wrong Places the fifth season premiere, haha.

Pelia seems pretty great, but it was a bit odd that she helps them steal the ship because they're gonna "need an engineer", decides to stick around at the end because she thought the escapades were fun, and yet doesn't actually appear between those two scenes, haha

I think executive meddling was in play here. That they wanted a more action packed episode for the season two premiere so the courtroom drama style follow up to the season one cliffhanger was pushed to episode two

That could make a lot of sense, actually. Especially given that S1 opened with a courtroom episode.

Agree on your points, episode was really good, but having Spock be the captain and focus of the first episode was kind of odd.

After Season 1, this quickly became one of my favorite Trek series.

another excellent episode. the crossfield looked a little strange, in the sense that it looked normal. speaking of looking normal, the klingons more-or-less tng style reopens that whole debate. but, since this is by far their best design, i'm quite happy to see it.

the hallway fight gave me some clarissa mao vibes, i wonder if there are some crew that worked on both. probably didn't help that the kid was also on both shows.

as for episode 1 and 2 being in the order they're in, it may be that the end of 2 relies on this one being first. or you all may be right.

i'm glad pelia had fun storming the settlement

People over on Reddit hated this episode, and I can't really understand why. Usually something goes horribly wrong when the first officer is in charge, and here we got to see everyone at their best and knock it out of the park. Pike being 100% on board for fighting for what is right no matter who says otherwise just put a big 'ol smile on my face.

This is the kind of optimistic science fiction I've been missing.
