I remember when it was not long ago that AI sucked. In the past year (like 2022, 2023), AI has suddenly become almost sapient. Like there are things that it's capable of generating that I never would have thought was possible. How did this come into being? What had to happen in order for AI to become so powerful so quickly?

At first it was all silly memes
Then it was even sillier memes + pretty decent hentai

Now it's potentially scary but potentially incredible hentai

Eh, the hentai I've seen is pretty horrifying if you've ever seen a real vagina before. Kinda similar to the problems with hands that have 8 fingers & shit.

it's been sophisticated for a very long time as it's internally used at the tech giants, maybe ten years. openai was just the first to think to open it up to consumers.

Traditionally, problems solved by AI are no longer considered AI. Think about speech recognition, handwriting recognition, expert systems, literary analysis, language translation, much of robotics, etc. The difference is that ChatGPT et al. are being loudly declared to be AI. By salesmen.

ChatGPT and countless AI image algorithms forced everyone to release what they were working on behind closed doors or be left behind.

That's pretty much it... AI used to mean full sentience like robots in movies, so those things were just called machine learning algorithms. It is the same process for stuff like ChatGPT but now people call it AI since the 'creative' works it churns out make it seem more like a person
