Seems like there are a lot of callbacks to other games with the upcoming Final Fantasy game? Do they really expect you to play all the other ones before jumping into the latest? If so thats really bad design because who the hell is going to play 30 years of previous games to understand one game.

The only one you need to skip is Crystal Chronicles. You'll 100% want to play the other games, including the FF7 remake.

I was worried that was the case. Fuck Square then in that case. Completely unacceptable to expect players to have play probably 1000 hours of games to understand this one. Shouldnt expect anything less from the company that direct Kingdom Hearts.

But yes, 14 is going to be extremly important up to the first 5 add ons (currently we only have 4 add ons released, but whatever), since they are also done by Yoshida.

Theres no ff you need to play before unless its a direct sequel like X-2 or lightning trilogy.

You have to actually play them all in Japanese to get all the references, so you better start studying now.

No you dont. The point of this game is so non FF fans will be drawn into the series as well and create a bigger fanbase. Ive heard several ppl who never been interested and want FF16 so go ahead. Yes you will ser familar FF things in this but if you like 16 then youll notice fsmiliar stuff from that game in the older games if you play them after.

Pretty much every FF game could be your first except for a few that has sequels in the same world like X-2 etc.

You need to read up on world mythologies as well so you'll get all the references to them in this one and the other games in the series.

I would highly recommend learning assembly, inventing your own programming language, building a compiler, creating your own final fantasy, and then beating that final fantasy as well. You won't truly appreciate 16 until you understand all of the ones and zeros behind the scenes.

To answer you seriously, the story is in no way connected to previous games and can 100% be understood by anyone who hasn't played any of the others.

The callbacks are just the standard final fantasy things that you see in the other games, like signature creatures, summons, etc. But the story of each game has nothing to do with each other unless its named something like FF 16-2 or FF 16: The Presequel

Just play 14 and skip 16 until it us on a real system.

Yes, at least play 7 (Watch Advent Children too), 8, 9, 10, 12, Tactics, and Kingdom hearts 1, 2, 3.

There is key Final Fantasy Lore at the end of Dissidia, Stranger of Paradise, and Theaterhythm.

Make sure to eat physicsl copies of all the games. Without having the essence of them in your bloodstream all of FF16 will bloe over your head.

A serious answer: no.

The key games you need to play in order to understand FF 16's plot are:

Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus
Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy XIII-3

You'll also need to watch the feature-length movies Advent Children and Kingsglaive (I'd recommend watching Advent Children after playing Dirge of Cerberus for the best narrative flow).

The other games are less important, but you will end up missing some clever references.

I have seen Advent Children although it was a long time ago. Is that canon for the remakes? I remember this being questionable at the time.

Everything is simultaneously canon and non canon. The non canonity is a part of the canon.

It is canon, as are the Adam Sandler movies.

You have to play every Zelda game too

You actually need to play the original release of FFXII on PS2 before playing the rerelease, so be wary of that. The games are complimentary to one another and tell two canon versions of the games events. Think of it like a multiverse, except in one Vaan really IS basch
