Youll be lost if you dont play 3. Peace Walker is related, too, but they did a good job of filling in the holes from that games story. 3 is a must-play though, youll be lost without playing that one beforehand, especially with one of the twists toward the end.

I recommend the whole series since every game is excellent. But if you're just interested in getting to 5 as fast as possible, definitely play 3 first. Peace Walker is recommended, but the tapes you can listen to in Ground Zeroes fill in the gaps if you want to skip it. Oh, and naturally Ground Zeroes is also required before Phantom Pain.

The story is pretty unremarkable. The game only really has good gameplay. Most of the characters (Kaz, Ocelot) behave totally out of character. There are a few revelations or plot twists that might not make sense, but knowing the context of them didn't really add much to the experience in my opinion.
