So that some image on the screen is "barely visble" .

Like fuck, if I actually follow that then I wouldn't be able to see. "Barley visible"? It be dark as fuck but its technically barely visible. But then the rest of the game will be too dark. I just usually use the default settings.

Just get in game and adjust it until it looks good to you.

Yeah. I listened at first, but then got annoyed at how dark everything was so now is just set it so I can clearly see the whatever.

Yeah I agree. The "intended" setting is always inevitably too low by a few notches at least. There aren't many situations, even in horror games, where I want to be struggling to make out what I'm seeing on a TV screen. It's often LESS immersive because I'm feeling frustrated by the game's visual design. Maybe this works better in VR where you view is a lot more "comprehensive" but I've never dealt with low gamma in VR before tbh.

I set it the way the game tells me to, then knock it up a few notches from there, as the "barely visible" is almost always too dark.

I always leave on default because your tv screen's HDR display settings are what represents the true projection of contrast and colors, although nothing is "absolute" or ideal with video games.

... gamers actually listen to that? Weirdos.

I always turn the brightness all the way up, well one notch or two under all the way up. It's great, feels like I'm getting all the advantage I can.
