The reviews for Isom #1 were as others have said, mid at best.

Which is honestly the worst reaction that something like Isom that heavily depended on culture war BS to sell copies. If the book was shit, they could say they're just being held down by the "woke agenda" or whatever, and if it was good, they could talk about how they've overcome the "SJWs" and proven they're right. Being mid just means everyone basically immediately forgot about it.

If they avoid culture war shit while running this one, its possible they're getting better, and just wanted to make the biggest splash possible for their debut, but I doubt it.

Also, the avoiding digital for some stupid reason means its like 70$ to ship to Canada, which means even if it was good there's no fucking chance I'm spending that for the equivalent of 3 issues of a comic.

As mid as Isom #1 is, its still better than nearly a decade of what Marvel or DC put out. Thats why its such a breath of fresh air. No more farts

Likely because American comics refuse to really expand from capeshit.

Which makes this whole thing very strange to me. It very much feels like July doesn't actually want Isom to succeed.

Not only is the price quite high (which is at least somewhat understandable, its like a kickstarter and when you support stuff like this you kind of expect to be paying a bit more) but there's also the refusal to go digital (removing a cheaper option for many who might have an interest), and making a superhero universe - insisting on trying to push into the most crowded part of the market at a point where most mainstream audiences are losing interest. Most of the advertised hype around Isom is for things that should be taking place years or decades down the line - that's a big sign something might be fishy. There's a reason Image branched out so much outside of superheroes.

Add to that a current output of roughly the equivalent to 3 issues per year meaning we'll likely never actually see any of the big "for the fans" things July actually promised. Because its not a hot new thing anymore, this kickstarter won't do nearly as well as the first one, nor will the inevitable next 5, and there will have to be like, an actual distribution plan eventually, and without the culture war BS, will this comic be able to survive regularly in competition with all the other comics? Based on the reviews of the first one, probably not.

And then a bunch of dumb stuff from the first campaign, like July not understanding Paypal's user agreement which actually led to nearly screwing a lot of people over (while July tried to blame PayPal for him fucking up) means that even if there isn't actually a fire here, there's definitely smoke.

There's no long-term hints for success here. Isom seems to be attempting to be jumping into the deepest part of the ocean, with big-ass sharks from Marvel, DC, Image, and basically every other comic company, and trying to compete with like 1/20th of the output, 3x the price and similar (if not worse) quality. And actively alienating like 1/2 (at worst) of the comic-reading audience who isn't turned off by the culture war crap. It's so weird if this is trying to be 100% legit.

It's a grift because he's using "anti-woke" rhetoric to push his comics, not the actual quality of the product. It's a scam because his claims that his books will somehow change the industry or cause Marvel/DC to change or regret their progressive storytelling is a blatant lie. And he's only pushing that narrative to get fools to buy his, by all accounts, very mediocre books.

So to answer your question, it will stop being a grift when he actually promotes his books on their merits and not simply to appeal to outrage.

Back when publishers still released sales numbers yes it definitely true.

The only thing profitable for Marvel and DC were the movies and lately weve seen how thats been long on decline.

All companies want your money, what Eric has done is put his where his mouth is and down major investments like buy a new warehouse and hire the previously big names on the industry like Chuck Dixon.
