I can't believe people are still taking the bit, one that he plays up on purpose, seriously.

At most he doesn't care about Star Wars like he does Indy, and knows what his reputation is and plays it up for the cameras.

He's crabby that he was dethroned by Samuel L Jackson for being the highest grossing actor. This was Jackson when he was just in every single movie on earth for like 15 years. Then when Ford cried that wasn't fair because doing that many movies to make billions doesnt count, Sam joined the MCU and ran victory laps.

He definitely cares more than he lets on. Heck, he had this whole running bit on Jimmy Kimmel's show where Chewbacca slept with his wife.

Carrie Fisher did the same thing when she was around, too, and most people don't realize she was a comedian.

Based on most of his interviews I've seen, apart from his other character traits, he simply has no tolerance for bullshit; a quality I can certainly admire. And the SW fandom is certainly chock-full of bullshit.

In a recent interview he said he doesn't have social anxiety disorder, though. Maybe he really does and is denying it, but according to him he doesn't. I'll take his word for it.

Your fans online have done some armchair diagnosis, looking at things youve said about being shy in social situations and some of your talk show appearances. Some assume youve wrestled with social anxiety disorder. Are they onto something?

Shit. That sounds like something a psychiatrist would say, not a casual observer. No. I dont have a social anxiety disorder. I have an abhorrence of boring situations. I was shy when I first went onstage I wasnt shy, I was fucking terrified. My knees would shake so badly, you could see it from the back of the theater. But thats not social anxiety. Thats being unfamiliar with the territory. I was able to talk myself through that and then enjoy the experience of being onstage and telling a story with collaborators.

I mean, Harrison Ford's dislike for Star Wars is mild compared to what Alec Guiness had to say about it.

Also, there are plenty of actors who play a role that puts them on the map but would rather not be remembered for that particular role because they consider it piffle compared to their more serious and demanding roles.

Why should someone be grateful for that? That "love" is just admiration for a character, not love for them as a person.

It's completely fine to dislike a role you have. Your comment is like saying, "You made your previous employer a bunch of money." That doesn't mean you loved the job.

If I remember right in an old interview, I think on the Empire of Dreams documentary, he says something to the point of he owes his success to Star Wars or he wouldn't be where he is without it. I think it's part him being annoyed by rabid fans and tired of all the questions and playing it up being a grouch.

I think it's this. To expand upon my earlier assertion, I remember an anecdote he gave on Conan (?) about his early career (forgive me, I'm too lazy to look it up and am probably gonna butcher it): he had a bit part in a movie alongside Tony Curtis I think, and a studio exec pulled him aside and tried to coach him on how to be a leading man. Curtis was playing a busboy, but the exec tried to impress on Ford that 'when you see Tony acting, you see Tony Curtis, understand?' And Ford shot back 'Oh, really? I thought you were supposed to be seeing a busboy?!"

That and similar interviews paints a picture to me that he's just never really bought into the typical Hollywood bullshit and ego-driven self-importance; not that he doesn't take pride in his career, but it is just a career, and he's not one of those actors who thinks his profession is going to solve world hunger and cure all diseases. So when a power-nerd SW fan comes up to him and gushes about how he's their hero, he's probably gonna tell them to chill out, he's just an actor. And when SW fans pester him about a Wookiepedia's worth of inane trivia, he's probably going to tell them to grow up and get a life, it's just a damn movie.

Ford has always been like this. Mark Hammil relates a story when they were promoting "Empire Strikes Back" on a Japanese talk show. Before they went on stage, Ford told Hammil and Fisher to not say anything and to let him do all the talking since he had more experience giving foreign interviews due to promoting "Raiders of the Lost Arc." Keep in mind, Fisher had been on talk shows with her mother Debbie Reynolds since she was a child, and was even a regular on her mother's variety show. Fisher kind of rolled her eyes over Ford's suggestion.

I see more autism than social anxiety, though these often go hand in hand. In interviews where people ask him how he feels about something, he cant really put it into words. And he doesnt have the patience for social bullshit. But hes in his element while acting and hes quite charismatic on screen.
