It's the year the Nazis came to power.

That's where the Holocaust begins: with legislation that starts to strip rights and citizenship from Jewish people.

Just to treat the fuckwits who voted for 1933 as if they weren't simply fuckwits, even if only for a moment...

Most working-class German families under Hitler in the 1930s still existed on a very modest standard of living. Even in 1938, German families actually ate less wheat bread, meat and meat products, bacon, milk, eggs, fish, vegetables, sugar, and beer than they had under the Weimar Republic in 1927. The only things they were eating more of after five years of Nazi government were rye bread, cheese and potatoes. (Source: The Nazi Economic Recovery, 193238 by Richard J. Overy, 2nd ed., Cambridge University Press, 1996.)

Meanwhile, German GDP per capita in the 1930s was lower than that of the USA, Canada, the UK, Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, The Netherlands, France, Denmark or Belgium. (Source: The Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy by Adam Tooze, Penguin, 2006.)

Even by 1937, the economy was only just above the level reached some twenty-five years before, and from 1936 onward all the indices of growth began to slow down. Was a bit of extra rye bread, cheese and potatoes worth a regime like Hitler's? Fuck that. But I guess that at least the regime allowed and encouraged you to hate, hate, hate, and for a lot of people the sheer fun of constant hating made living under the regime worthwhile and outweighed the relative lack of material benefits.

yeah there are some fairly persistent myths about quality of life in nazi germany (stuff about healthcare and such) but those policies existed in the weimar republic, and hitler stripped those policies away in favour of privatization

There is an "enlightened" moron I know who went on a tangent last night talking about how "1933" was better than Current Day Germany and treating it like it's an agreed upon fact by most people. But what with being a coward and all, he tried to be "subtle" by avoiding calling it Nazi Germany.

"Conservative" doesn't even describe this dude. He's so far down the crazy hole, it's not even funny. Can't even think for himself, just spews a bunch of fucked up bullshit the internet teaches him and can't seem to grasp why nobody likes him.

After all that, he said, we asked him if he thinks Nazis (and what they did) are bad and he did the usual thing where he'd deflect to "Communism killed more people." At the end, this guy just could not say "Yes" to Nazis being bad to save his life. And even went on about how Genocide wasn't part of their beliefs. And he's dead fucking serious too...

Frustrating stuff.

Thanks for this. I didn't know that because I've mostly heard that the one good thing Hitler did was pull that country out of a depression (albeit in an extremely bad way cause they targeted Jews as the source of all their problems). I didn't know they were still that financially fucked at that point.

I'm currently traveling in Europe and am in Leipzig right now, and hot damn, this place is rad. Their infrastructure is mindblowing with all their wind power farms and public transportation and shit. It goes to show that when you put your focus on just being better instead of hating the other guy, you can get a lot of shit done right!

The German economy under Hitler may look like it enjoyed a strong upturn when seen against the very low baseline of the depression years of 192932, but Nazi economic policy was definitely not a miracle formula.

Tooze (The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy) writes:

"By 1935 German GDP in real terms had recovered to roughly the same level it had stood at in 1928. This was no doubt a rapid recovery. But it was not vastly superior to the recovery achieved in the United States under a very different policy mix. Nor, in terms of the rate of growth, was it superior to the rebound from the Weimar Republic's first serious recession over the winter of 192627, when the twelve-month growth rate was higher than at any time during the Third Reich. It is possible therefore to imagine a similarly rapid recovery taking place even under a very different policy regime. In this strict counterfactual sense, Nazi economic policy cannot claim to have 'caused' the German economic recovery."
