Apple has an advantage in image quality since the Hololens 2 came out 4 years ago. Apple can basically switch over to VR mode, which darkens the outside area minus the models. But from what I've seen, I haven't seen any features that the Hololens 2 or Magic Leap 2 can't do right now. When I asked for a Varjo XR-3 ($7000 VR headset) to try out, they responded with "how about 2?" The problem, as you can see with the price, is that it is not consumer friendly. So what 3rd party is going to make an F-35 helmet thing and sell it to like 5 people? No one, but a large company can certainly pay a developer for an F-35 training simulation (or just make it themselves), that's very easy. AR/VR headsets are more for enterprise use, so it's weird to me that Apple's current marketing is trying to target home users.
