Barely any games exist outside of their 3 month release window.

Elden Ring is the last one with any staying power and I would argue it didn't have a lot of competition for quite awhile.

This. It's rare for a game to still be talked about after that window these days, regardless of how good the game is.

That's the problem with these movie-type games. The more you try to revisit them the more pointless timewasters start showing themselves. You know the plot so the boring walking exposition scenes just become a waste of time. You're not wowed by the environments so the "hold up to climb" sections just become a waste of time.

There's also not much to go back to. The combat isn't deep enough and character progression isn't diverse enough to warrant going back through the game to try out a new build or something.

I'm not a big fan of BoTW, but I do like Elden Ring, and its clear why these games stick around for so long

-They respect the player's time and let them get to the good bits
-A lot more depth to sink your teeth into, whether that's BOTW's open world or Elden Ring's combat
-Variety and player personalisation. It's my adventure through Elden Ring, not my viewing of a script.

In the sense that movie-type games as you describe them are not designed to be games you replay for a generation.

They are designed to be an excellent single play and then you move on to other things.

BOTW, Elden Ring, they are hoping that their gameplay structure is good enough to invest you for a console generation. GOW Ragnarok is designed to keep you invested for the length of its narrative. They don't anticipate people wanting to replay it over and over.

I'm aware that's not what they're trying to be. And I think that's a problem. I think a game being able to keep you hooked and coming back to it is a pretty objectively good trait compared to playing a game once and forgetting about it.

Oh there is no question that a game having replay value is amazing. It's about what you value for your 70 bucks. 40 hour movie experience once might be worth that 70 bucks just as much as 300 hours of BOTW.

I played BOTW longer but I enjoyed GOW Ragnarok more, if that makes sense.

There's a sequence about 1/3 or 1/4 in Ragnarok where you literally just move forward and talk for 2 or 3 hours. There might be extremely minor encounters mixed in there, but it is a minor distraction to the talking and walking.

It's one of the worst things that has ever been in a video game.

"Movie-type games" aren't the only ones that aren't talked about for years.

Are people talking about Doom II or Half-Life all the time anymore? Most people don't play any type of singleplayer game over and over for years.

Unless it's literally a discussion about your favorite games all time, 99.99% of games drop out of the public consciousness.

You're comparing games that have falled out of favour within months to games from over 2 decades ago. People talked about Doom and Half Life a lot longer than they did movie games.

Games used to be talked about a lot more in general two decades ao because there was a lot less to talk about.

Tbh outside of the DLC and being compared to TOTK I haven't heard much talk about Elden Ring this year either.

People take 'talking' on the internet too seriously in general. Our attention span for things are shorter than they've ever been. It used to be a movie like Pretty Woman would get talked about and referenced for an entire decade. Most things are the center of attention for a few weeks and then we move on. That's how it is now.
