Assaulting a referee and his family at the airport after a match is just the latest in the chain of ludicrous violence at and around football matches, aimed at individuals it should absolutely not be aimed at.

Like a few weeks ago when hooligans broke through a fence to have a go at a part of the seating where family members of staff and officials were seated.

Or when hooligans affiliated with PEC Zwolle (Dutch club, could not find an English article) attacked children at hockey practice, after their club lost a match.

Has it always been this severe and is proper attention finally being shone on it, or did the pandemic lockdown break something inside the mind of hooligans and things just got more severe when they were allowed out again?

Soccer is almost as boring as golf.

just as in every sport some fans are rowdy but soccer is not a primitive sport just an wrong take

Even though I really do not care about the sport itself, I do want it to be clear supporters/fans and hooligans are two distinct groups. And that I am not blaming ALL supporters, for the actions of a few hooligans.

I would not be surprised if it is the most widespread used word from English, in other languages, that stays the truest to the original English word in usage and pronunciation.

Ohh yeah, every sport has that, including sports I love, but soccer is the biggest so will have it the worst. Soccer is a primitive sport though, it's one of the oldest and simplest sports but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I have an Argentinian friend and the stories he has are just insane. Like apparently they (basically) have to have particular areas at the stadium for children/families to be seated in just to keep them safe. Also at his home stadium they had to disallow visiting opposition fans as it became potentially too dangerous for them (they could be assaulted by the home fans).

Americans play soccer, especially as kids, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were more soccer players than baseball players.

As adult sports FANS, though, few people are interested in soccer. Look at any American sports media: soccer is there, but it's on the outside looking up at the more popular sports. There are some hardcore fans in urban areas, yes, but the country as a whole isn't very interested. Heck, I was listening to the local sports talk radio this week and one of their quiz questions was who won the World Cup: only 2 of 6 on the show knew.

Baseball in particular is fading, yes, but they still get 30,000 people to come out to 81 home games every year in most markets. Soccer just rose above 20,000 per game, so that's legit, but they vary greatly by market and play only 17 home games...the total attendees are still much lower. And I don't even know where you would watch their games on TV.

ANYways, it's a fun sport to play. It's boring to watch...and probably always will be. Flopping makes it (and hooligans willing to fight over it) look ridiculous. I won't even consider watching until they man up (like the womens' teams, who don't flop) and get on their feet. Hurray for the NBA, which mostly defeated flopping (not that I'm usually a big NBA guy).
