...when driving through the country/really rural areas?
A large variety too: Raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, cats, dogs, pigs, etc. I've even seen some horses before. Never fails to unsettle me just a bit.

it's true. the one time in which i saw my neighbors dog get struck by a car (dog went 50-100 feet before the car stopped). had to tell it's owner what happened and then the owner got the dog into her car and driven to the vet. couldn't get to there in time.

No... I live in the city where you would see roadkill every now and then.
Here, I'm talking an uncomfortable series of dead animals laying off on the side of the road. They're not even gored from being hit by cars, they're just laying there dead.

It always makes me a bit sad because I figure that, fairly frequently, the death was not quick.

When I was in high school I used to walk home from school with a friend and there was a dead dog by the side of the road that no one picked up. We basically saw the body decompose everytime we passed it.

For real. It never fails to bum me out. Chalk that up as another reason I hate going through the country.

A moose gives no fucks about your car on the highway. Hit that sumbitch and best case scenario is you have an annoyed moose in your passenger seat.

I assume it could be a number things from diseases and fatigue. It's always super sad to see because you just know they suffered.

Why are they almost always on the side of the road? Does the impact send them flying?

In the summer especially, you can see dead armadillos all over the place here out in the country, on the sides of the road, in the middle of the road, as nothing left but little piles of goo, etc.

I ran over a rabbit once while biking, I dodged him with my front wheel, but he uturn sprinted into my back tire after I turned away from him. I screamed got off my bike a short distance to turn back to see if I could mercy kill the injured thing, but it had run away into the bush probably in adrenaline. I feel awful about it because I imagine it had a long death.
