enemies call each other out specifically, they notice when someone is missing, they have strategies they call out, and so on.

I hear their patterns get more complex on harder difficulties.

MGS2 has one particularly awesome example of enemy behaviour when they clear out rooms. They actually behave like professionals by communicating and covering one another. But I wouldnt consider that AI since its scripted.

MGS3 took a step back in this regard. In that game the enemies just psychically know where you are and walk straight up to you. Try hiding in a locker during an alert. Its useless.

The AI in MGS games is pretty mediocre. It's barely changed ever since MGS2.

Metal Gear Solid 2 and onward. You really feel like you're being hunted.

Alien Isolation for its Xenomorph AI is amazing.

enemies change a lot when alerted, walking outside of their vision in mgs2 is okay but you can't rely on it when they're alert
same with mgs3 and in the jungle, there arent many automatically closing doors so you can't hide that easily when running away during an alert

MGS is just scripted if, then statements. If everyone is KOd in a room, then make the next batch cautious.

I think Halo Reach was good. Enemies react quickly, actually dodge, panic, become more aggressive, retreat, etc.

I've not played TLOU2 so I don't know how true it is that it does all that, but I've also not heard of another game that does all that.

Shouting out names is one thing, each enemy having their own specific name is another.

In MGSV TPP you have a 3500 person base filled with unique named soldiers... Unless you go out of your way to duplicate them, that is.
I saw this one base that was nothing but Flamming Buffalo's

CPU level 8 in Street Fighter 6.

With MGSV, I have snipered some mook at the very edge of the game's max draw distance, with a silenced rifle, and the guards still know where I am.

in TLoU2, it's not just that they call out their friends, but also that they "track" them. like, if "Joe" isn't where he's supposed to be, it creates a caution amongst the enemies, and they might call him out (this is assuming you killed him and hid his body).

they also call out dynamic strategies based on where you were last seen. for example, they might say, she's under that car; flank her.

when they know you're in the area, they look into the grass and under cars, and stuff like that.

Spectromancer: The game is over 10 years old and the best ai is better than most competitive players, without even needing to cheat.

as for U1-3 & TLoU, you're talking about smaller levels with linear routes, where the enemies might already be in cautionary stages vs TLoU2, where you're talking about full fledged levels, where enemies have wider routes and start on patrol, often not even knowing your character is in the area/a threat.

what you're talking about is during combat states, when enemies know your character is in the area, and are actively trying to engage with them.

in TLOU2, they start looking in those areas in a caution/middle state, when they might hear something suspicious but don't necessarily know your character is in the area.

that's two different things.

also, in TLoU2, if you kill someone with a silenced weapon, and and enemy sees their friend die but not you, they'll go to the area the shot came from, but won't immediately know where you are.

Deus Ex, because the sheer exploitability of the AI allows you to do so much cool stuff.

Apparently the AI of the creatures in Rain World is insane.

The creatures have crazy reactive ai so the creatures behave like theyre real animals and it creates this amazing ecosystem for the game.

Oh and the AI of the cannibals in The Forest is insane. They don't mindlessly run towards the player they sit and observe some will get mad when you kill a tribe mate and some will even cry over the body. Some of them act like leaders and they make patrols. You kill enough of them and they fear you and run away, regroup and make a new plan of attack.

The Forest was amazing I can't wait to try out the sons of the forest.

There's a sci-fi RTS series called AI War where one of their bragging features is the difficulty and intelligence level of the AI. The devs even asked that anyone who beats the hardest difficulty AI submit a bug report so they can fix it lol
