my parents grew up poor, so growing up i was forced to always finish my plate, no matter how full i was. i wouldn't delve into the penalties for not doing so in this topic, but let's just say if it happened today the CPS would've taken me away from them

but now I feel an ingrained obligation to finish all my meals...but restaurant meal portions are so large

some lunch portions are 1400 calories (I learned about calories a couple years ago), that's almost enough calories for an entire day!

A 2000 calorie diet is not for everyone and is not the normal across the board.

People's caloric needs are different on a person-to-person basis.

I hardly ever finish an entire portion at a restaurant unless I just haven't eaten the entire day + done a lot of activities. 9.9/10 I'm getting a to-go box.

I can't say there's any reason for it. Or rather that it's simply always been that way so nobody ever really questioned it. But the sort ansew likely is that we just produce enough of it to comfortably do so.

2000 is fairly universal for people unless you're noticeably smaller or less active than a person should be.

Capitalism. More bang for your buck so you'll choose them over a competitor then everyone started doing and it's just the norm now. If they scaled back the portions now people would gripe its too expensive for so little

Where the hell are these resturants with large portions? I want to get my moneys worth cause these days most items are $15+ each and I need about 2 or 3 things to make me full

I just eat half then take the other half home. Two meals for the price of one and I don't have to make myself sick attempting to eat all of it.

Go to a mid-tier, sit-down, restaurant that isn't a chain.

The intent is to replicate going to your grandmother's house where she absolutely loads you up with food and sends stuff home with you.

You're not supposed to eat everything in one sitting, you're supposed to have leftovers to eat later.

Basically this.

Buying and preparing your own food is cheap especially when doing it in bulk.

It's not worth the time or money of the restaurant to sell normal portions.

A lot of people are gluttons, myself included, well eat the whole thing or 3/4 of it. I know at least a lot of restaurants I could end up eating just half of it and it would be a full meal. Cava, Chipotle, many Chinese and Mexican restaurants are some of the common ones I've bought meals from which could make two meals.
