No, but if somebody with airpods walks by and interferes with the signal he'll do the worm.

Yep. The local news station here USED to report on things like this, but for at least the past decade, they've been a bunch of ghouls and mostly like to report on people dying, usually through getting killed in car wrecks.

I'm actually curious how they prevent bluetooth interference. If I walk too close to my microwave while wearing bluetooth headphones, the signal starts to get lost. For me that's a song popping in and out. But for him it could be completely collapsing, leading to potentially deadly head injuries.

Realistically the bluetooth connection is most likely more of a temporary solution to allow further research into the sending/receiving end without needing as much surgery for the patient volunteers. Long-term I would assume both ends would be connected by subdermal fiber optics or something like that.

I'm not sure I would spend the time optimizing recordings to send over bluetooth for a temporary solution. It's incredibly hard to compress and send these signals with high fidelity.

It's a chicken and egg thing. They may not have been able to get permission to run wires down someone's body to test the technology. Yes, it means lots of effort making the wireless approach work well, but if the only alternative is "don't do the research at all" than it's a reasonable compromise.

If you have approval to implant a device into somebody's brain, pretty much everything else to support that device would likely be approved too. My guess is that this was a decision that was made explicitly because there's a desire for these implants to be wireless (as they would be less cumbersome, less prone to damage).

It was probably the easiest way to prove that it works.
Adding a wire gives you two options, have it outside or inside the body.
Both options can cause complications, which can be skipped this way.
Now when they have proved that it actually works, they can start working on making it better.
