I'm not ranking 64 so highly out of nostalgia either. I played Sunshine a lot as a kid also, and I think that game is a complete piece of shit compared to any other mainline Mario game.

3D World is still a very solid if not bland romp but there isn't much reason to go back to 3D Land these days.

Oh, and 64DS was hella fun too. Can't believe they got away with those awesome gambling minigames in retrospect. I don't care for the muted color palette though.

Honestly 64 isn't nearly as good as people remember it, that's all I'll say. The recent 3d collection completely convinced me of this. Great for speedrunning, but even Odyssey is better for that now

I actually played through 64 again a few months ago and it was just as fun as I remember it. Some levels are weird, and the difficulty balancing is a bit wack in terms of even very late levels having extremely easy/plain stars, but just plain moving around in that game feels so good. the momentum, the weight of your jumps, the 2 types of wallkicks... and combine that with the levels generally being pretty compressed so there's lots of cool different ways to move from point A to point B and the game just feels packed with stuff

I thought sunshine, galaxy 1, and odyssey were boring. I like mario 64 ds and Mario 64

Kind of surprised Odyssey isnt taking more top spots. I thought it was pretty clearly the best Mario to date. Mario 64 on steroids with the great platforming challenges from Galaxy. Galaxy 1 and 2 were of course excellent (all of these games are) but they tended to get a little repetitive theme-wise, and the occasional big levels were uninspired. Odyssey levels were so varied and creative.

I think the early levels are fantastic, but the water levels are all really bad, same for the cave levels. Rainbow road one is cool at first then you realize without skills, you gotta do that stupid carpet thing every single time you do that level. Clock is cool but in practice, it shares the problem of having to do the starting section over and over. It's still good, just that I think other 3D Marios are better. I don't think 64 sucks, since I think 64 DS was great. The extra stars in that one and better camera controls via the touch screen enhance the experience.
