No, but that doesnt stop the alumni association from emailing / mailing me relentlessly trying to guilt me into more money as if they dont have enough to keep their current student body from sleeping in their cars and not having to park 5 miles away from campus or else risk a $100 parking ticket for not paying for the $500 semester parking pass.

No. For awhile it was because I couldn't afford it. Now I work for a university (not my alma mater) and see how the advancement office works, and its complete bullshit. They get alumni to donate thinking that their money is going to cool stuff, when in reality its being used to pay for toilet paper or copier toner

I donated to them for several years. It was called tuition.

My favorite alumni association moment was when I was in grad school. They called me asking if I'd donate to help the school out. I was like "dude, I still go here. I'm literally walking to class right now." And instead of apologizing for the mistake dude still tried to get me to donate 5 dollars.

I blocked the number.

Give their children an easy entry into the college, pretty much. It's the legal way of bribing the school to accept your child even if they arent as deserving as other choices.

Friends,

Well I graduated from a few colleges. so to them, no.

I worked at a different one, for 11 years. Where I really did not "officially" donate.

Many times the students would have bake sales, or something, I would give 20 dollars for a 2 dollar cookie. OR a pie in the face, I would give them 20 and not even throw a pie.

So that is kinda of a donation. To the students but not really the college.
I worked at a university, so I got to see the WASTE they do. Why would I give
IDIOTS more money, to waste.??????

https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/paying-for-college/articles/see-20-years-of-tuition-growth-at-national-universities

https://educationdata.org/college-tuition-inflation-rate

There is a graph in the second link that shows the increase per decade. you see a huge jump in the 80's, when I went to school. I am not even sure how it rose over the last 50 years, but it outpaced inflation, for NO reason.

Not entirely true, depending on the school. Tons of small, private universities are in danger of closing due to lack of funds

The endowment thing is the main reason I don't donate (esp. to my grad school). At a certain point, that number is so big that it's only value is in bragging about it/ranking against other schools with astronomical endowments.

I donate annually a small amount to my university and also to the component school I specifically attended. I also donate to my middle/upper school, and my wife donates to hers.

In somewhat related news, my university is widely expected to announce the end of legacy preference very soon, although it is linked to the expected end of affirmative action, which will have the side effect of ending transparency in admissions. So, it's not clear what's actually changing.

I donate to Alabama around football season to get some game watch perks at alumni bars in DC, and I donate to Notre Dame when they offer "gifts" with a certain donation threshold which are usually cool paint prints of campus stuff or window clings

Yes, it is an Ivy. Over the past few years, they had already declared that legacy only helps for early decision and narrowed the definition to alum kids or grandkids. Most legacy applicants are rejected (obviously). The Ivies don't need legacy admissions; it is rooted in antisemitism and the super-rich can buy their way in without legacy preference. If they reject my daughter, I'll stop donating, but they will not care one bit.
