In Super Mario Bros. 3, Wendy O. Koopa was the most athletic Koopaling. She could jump significantly higher than the Mario Bros. themselves. In Super Mario World, she passively hid behind decoys while fireballs circled the arena.

Her boss fight was a mirror of the Lemmy Koopa boss fight from earlier in the game, but the setup made more sense for him. He was depicted as physically scrawny and uncoordinated character. His boss fight in the previous game had him trying keep his distance from the Mario Bros.

With Wendy, it was a complete 180. She was the toughest Koopaling, but also the laziest? Most cowardly? On the plus side, the peekaboo style combat allowed her some facial expressions the other Koopas didn't have.

I always thought Wendy was the hardest Koopaling in SMB3

It can be hard to dodge her rings and she moves very unpredictably

Yeah. They tried to give her a bit of personality in that fight too. She angrily (?) hops in place before making her initial charge.

I know they had to repeat the boss fight types due to limitations. It's the only real disappointment in the game for me. But, honestly, I think it would have made sense if Larry and Wendy had swapped boss fights. The push-your-opponent-into-lava fight would have still been a departure, but I think it would have been closer to what she was previously. Larry was a starter opponent in the previous game, so it's not like there was a standard of comparison where there was any expectation for him to be tough.

Wendy being the toughest opponent was probably an accident though. They probably underestimated the difficulty of her fight in Super Mario Bros. 3. In any event, I couldn't see Nintendo in 1990 making Wendy O. Koopa the penultimate boss fight. She's lucky to be the second to last of the Koopalings.

The fight with Larry is difficult because of the sporadic nature of the three fireballs popping up out of the lava. The clock is also ticking by that point due to the level's length running down the clock no matter how well the player dose. It may not have the boss character jumping, but it presents them as being willing to challenge the Marios head-on. And it can be a chaotic fight.

Wendy's fight is easier than Lemmy's due to the level flooring. Lemmy may have one fireball instead of two, but the player is much more likely to get hit trying to make it over hurdles than they are being threatened with two fireballs in a wide-open space. That's my experience with it, anyway.

I'd post a video, but it would just be someone who has beaten the game a hundred times showing off how they can beat the game in a no hit / no death run. The only way to know what it's like to fight Wendy for the first time is to fight her for the first time.

And if you haven't played Super Mario Bros. 3, you're really missing out.

I never noticed before, but none of the bosses in Super Mario World run and jump at the player.

  • Roy and Morton drop from the ceiling.
  • Ludwig will spin for a while in his shell, then make a concentrated leap across two screens regardless of where the hero is.
  • The rest don't jump in any capacity.

I bet this was a deliberate choice to distance Super Mario World from Super Mario Bros. 3. I mean, the last stretch of the fight with the Koopa Clown Car has it bouncing along the roof. But that's more the vehicle bouncing than it is Bowser leaping.

Pretty sure you're putting way more thought into this than Nintendo ever did

It's not that big a deal

That looks super cool! But with the rod, isn't she basically just a copy of lenny? Or Ludwig or whoever the one with the rod was that shoots fireballs.

I think SMW was the only time Ludwig wasn't the final Koopaling to be fought. The Nintendo Player's Guide claims him to be Bowser's second in command which is why he's usually the last Koopaling.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the return of the Koopa Kids, had them in the same order as Super Mario World. It makes sense that Ludwig would be Bowser's second in command as he's Bowser's eldest child.

Er, I mean. He's the oldest member of the Koopa Kids who are in no way related to Bowser because Bowser Jr. is Bowser's only son.

All of the Koopa Kids have magic wands in Super Mario Bros. 3. The story of the game is that each of them has transformed a king into an animal and Mario must go to the various kingdoms to restore their rulers to their true forms.

Without giving too much away, there is some variation with what the magic wands shoot and with how the Koopalings fight.
