Not a sequel to Interstellar lol. This movie is hilarious, its like they took that scene in interstellar with Matt Damon and made an entire movie around it, while making him come across as the good guy this time around compared to what happens in interstellar. And then you add Jessica Chastain as well, and the fact that this movie came out right after interstellar too. Crazy.

Pretty good movie. Apparently it's hard sci-fi? I googled hard sci-fi and the search results included the book version of this.

I've seen the movie, read the book, and listened to the audio book (the narrator is fucking insanely good).

I'll probably re-read it sometime soon. Great story.

Its crazy that its over 2 hours of matt Damon just stranded on an empty planet trying to survive and talking to himself.

Love the soundtrack

I LOVE the book, read it like 3-4 times, and I remember I was in the movie theatre, can't remember what it was going to see, but the previews started and they played a preview for this. I didn't know they were making it into a movie, and as the trailer played and it clicked with me that it was a movie version of The Martian, I literally shouted "OH SHIT! THIS IS THE MARTIAN!!!"

My wife still likes to make fun of me for that moment.

I love the movie as well, but I wasn't thrilled with the way the "rescue" played out at the end. Was a little too Hollywood for my liking. In the book, they kinda just go back and grab him.

How much more money are we going to have to spend rescuing Matt Damon from space before they ban him from leaving the planet?

eh? Its probably like half and half with MD and then the rest of the cast which is equally interesting imo. Absolutely love the making the shuttle 5000kg lighter scene.

The Martian is kind of stupid but in a very loveable way.

I liked it when Sean Bean had no idea what the Council of Elrond was.

My main two takeaways. Spoilers.

1) I like how in the book Watney suggests that he uses pressurized air to propel himself in space like Iron Man, and everybody told him no, that'd be stupid. And then the movie just had him do that and it worked.

2) China being the surprise good guys pissed off a lot of people as Hollywood kowtowing to the CCP, when that was literally following the source material almost verbatim.

Agreed. Book ending was more of a team effort while movie made it all about the captain. Although movie epilogue was a good add.

Never seen it. Does he buy a zoo in it? I make it a point to only see Matt Damon in movies where he owns a zoo. Once, I accidentally watched the movie The Great Wall because I assumed the wall was some sort of animal enclosure. Worst experience of my life.

You used to seem like an alright guy. Now I don't know anymore. Now I suspect you're some kind of monster. A monster that can't be tamed. You can't even be held in a zoo. You'd frighten the children. You can only be held in contempt.

Interstellar is one of my favorite movies ever, but The Martian was also amazing.

It's sad that we got that 1-2 so many years ago and have barely gotten anything else comparable since. I thought Ad Astra could be something, but that was just a movie made to get me to scream "WTF" every 5 minutes.

I really like how the early 2010s was like a second Renaissance for space movies after the 90s peak, with a lot more focus on even more stunning visual effects of space and planets and space travel.
