The agency opened a comment request in February for feedback on its proposal to revise long-term school nutrition standards, which includes less added sugars in school lunch and breakfast programs to "reduce children's risk of chronic disease."

If that's the goal, then yes, chocomilk has to die.

Why do schools waste so much? The quality of food can be questionable, given the lack of on-site cooking facilities and minimal USDA funding. And many students end up with food that they dont want, thanks to a USDA reimbursement requirement that students take lunch items from at least three out of five categories vegetable, fruit, protein, grains, and milk. At least one of those choices must be a fruit or vegetable. In theory, having food choices reduces waste, but students arent allowed to take just one or two items they know theyll eat. Aiming for the federal government to cover a reimbursable meal, staff often push students to take more.

Let the kids have the chocolate milk for God's sake. That's the only thing they enjoy about school lunches. Everybody knows that block of "pizza" isn't going to give the kids a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel.

That's their parents' fault, not the school's. Removing choc milk from the cafeteria isn't going to change anything if their parents keep feeding them microwave meals and McDonald's.

The problem, of course, is that whole-wheat reduced-fat-cheese pizza and a mandatory fruit never means that the kids will actually eat it.

They could do healthier versions of chocolate milk... which probably none of the suppliers have. Or lower the portions to 6 ounces? There are ways around this. Nothing that a PE class cant help as well.
