I always felt that Community was a weird show. I felt Season 2 and 3 were peak for it. And while people consider 4 to be the worst season, I thought 5 and 6 were definitely more scatterbrained and less fun.
Season 1 was solid for a setup to the general show.

I saw the first season and then a random episode where they were hooked on a VCR shooting game that involved virtual reality and something else you'd see in Heavy Rain in a different storyline that was so hilarious.

I'd personally rank the latter half of the show's run 6>4>5. Season 5 is technically better-written on paper than S4, but it's just so damn saturated with bitterness that's it's downright unpleasant to watch from start to finish (I'd probably just cherry-pick the two or three standout eps on a rewatch). S6 was a lot better than I expected it to be - Paget Brewster and Keith David were excellent additions, and the inevitable paintball episode actually turned out to be a lot of fun.

I think that Season 6 is alright on its own, it just feels like a completely different show from the prior seasons. I suppose I could say I enjoy it enough as a Sitcom, I don't really enjoy it as a follow up to Community Season 5. I don't enjoy Season 5, I'll say that much. Season 4 was where I was just like "is it just me, or is this less funny?"

That episode has been "vaulted" for lack of a better word by the creators. The only way to see it is to buy the prior release DVDs or Blu-Rays.

If you weren't aware of the show's history, show creator Dan Harmon was fired after S3 for feuding with Chevy Chase, which is why S4 feels like such an odd duck. Then Chase got fired towards the end of S4, at which point they brought Harmon back for S5 onward (you can tell that some of the late-season eps either wrote Pierce out completely, or briefly used a double with convenient camera angles).

S5 was supposed to be the grand return to form, but it's pretty obvious that Harmon let the chip on his shoulder dictate much of the writing, to the show's further detriment. NBC didn't renew the show after S5 (it was on the bubble every year, it's honestly amazing the show lasted as long as it did), and S6 came about some time later as a streaming service exclusive.

IIRC, it would be relatively easy to just edit Chang's scenes out of the D&D episode too - it would suck, but the ep would still be perfectly salvageable. Clearly someone in charge didn't want to compromise their artistic vision, and honestly in this case I can't say that I blame them.

Just remember folks, as you walk down the road of life, never let your DVDs out of your sight.

Yeah I don't know why that other guy didn't like s6, but overall that ranking is just about right, at least with 6 being better than 5 and 4. Can't decide between the other 2, on the one hand it was straight up wrong to fire Harmon and deny him s4 which had crucial moments like jeff finally confronting his dad, with the writers fumbling most of the way through with some terrible concept episodes. On the other hand s4 also had some heartfelt moments probably in an attempt to bring back the series from the brink of darkness, like Pierce defending Britta to Jeff, or Jeff defending Pierce to Annie and the Dean.

S5 was so overly bitter and I was not a fan of the guy from BB they brought in. But it also had episodes I liked, I definitely loved the GI Jeff cartoon episode.

Now as for S6... I'll admit, I didn't even appreciate this season when it first came out. After 2 seasons of very polarizing episodes and quality, and with the show moving to Yahoo, and the new format which made the episodes feel overly long, it made s6 seem not that great initially. But like you said, my god did the additions to the cast knock it out of the park. Frankie is one of the best characters added so late into the show's lifespan. And Keith David's addition speaks for itself, loved the guy ever since finding out he's the voice of Goliath. And it's a season that definitely keeps getting better on rewatches. Not every instances of meta humor worked, but I crack up at like 90% of the meta jokes from this season. It had so many little moments that were great in addition to the big laughs, like Dean and Jeff's silent convo trying to guess Frankie's sexuality.

Sidenote if you like Paget Brewster she's great on Another Period, a show I thought was hilarious but no one not even online really watched. It's like a mockery of those KK reality shows but set in early 20th Century America with some hilarious anachronisms.

I just did a recent re-watchthrough of the show, and my rankings are as follows:
3=2>1>4>6>5

The only change from my original watchthrough is that I can't decide if I like Season 3 or 2 more. Both keep switching around. And I'd put 1 up there with 3 and 2, honestly. For how grounded the show was in season 1, it still had the same feel as the next two seasons, just without all the gimmicks.

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I like S4 more than 5 and 6. When I first watched the show, I had no idea about the Harmon drama, so I didn't have that lens to view it. Honestly, I felt it was almost as strong as Season 1, just without reaching its highs. There was a lot of character development that season, and the gimmick episodes were no more outlandish than the previous season. I was curious if anything would change on a rewatch knowing what I know now about its development, but nothing has changed. As another poster mentioned, there were some great character moments there, particularly with Pierce and Brita, Jeff and Pierce, and Abed with various cast members. I really think the only downside was the last string of episodes conveniently missing Pierce and the awkward way he was written out.

But none of that compares to what Season 5 did. I was perfectly fine leaving his ending in S4 the way it was. Though rushed, it worked. But they had to drag it out further with the one episode that anyone who saw it knows what I'm talking about. Despite some funny scenes, I didn't think it was necessary. The whole season itself just felt empty, with cast members leaving left and right and most of the plots not really building to anything.

Season 6 was okay, but it just didn't feel like Community anymore. It felt like a completely different show that just happened to share some of the characters (Abed even made a comment about this in one of the eps, about how the show is just phoning it in at this point). I'll agree that the new cast is what saved it from being worse than Season 5. But it still just didn't give me the same Community vibe as the first 4 seasons.

Season 4 was a straight up abomination. Season 5 started out great but by the end of the season it was basically just as bad as season 4. Season 6 was a good recovery and very solid all the way through. If anything it got even better towards the end of the season. Id say:

1 = 2 > 3 > 6 > 5

I'd still put S2 as the best. It has my favorite episodes, and as a whole it struck a nice balance between embracing the silly concepts while still keeping a foot in reality. S3's fantastic as a string of conceptual episodes, but overall it completely loses its grounding and flanderizes certain characters to such a degree that for once I don't mind using the term 'flanderization.'

Season 6 was interesting because they weren't restricted by time limits anymore. Sometimes things went on too long and the network time limit of 22 minutes allowed for better pacing. However, it did allow for some great things that would not happen before such at the Dean running around the virtual world and the season finale not feeling rushed.

Season 6 felt a lot smaller somehow. The show didn't exactly have a ton of scene changes, but season 6 feels like it was all shot in one small room. I did really enjoy Paget Brewster. Keith David had moments, but I never really felt like he meshed with the group very well.

Even with all of my gripes about that season, the final episode was really well done. It got a really nice send off.
