At its most basic, it goes:

It is better to believe in God, die, and have him turn out to not be real, than to *not* believe in God, turn out that he is real, and end up in Hell.

It's essentially a "what do you have to lose?" approach to the threat of eternal damnation.

It's bullshit.
Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

it's dumb.

it presupposes one specific god, and doesn't take into account various things - multiple gods, a god of a different faith/a faith that is unknown, a god (or gods) that don't want to be worshipped, and so on.

Doesn't it kinda get thrown out the window if you introduce other God's/religions? It's assuming that the Christian God is the only true one, but you are just as equally screwed if say, you worship God and then find out Zeus is the real deity you should be worshipping.

That's pretty much the conclusion I came to as a kid. If there's some form of hell that I go to because I didn't suck this particular god's dick enough out of all the possible options, then that isn't a god I want to involve myself with anyway.

i have a lot of thoughts about it but at the end of the day it's intellectually lazy in my opinion

there are more compelling and well reasoned cases to be made for theism or at least the frameworks it justifies

These. Even if god(s) exists, we have no idea which it is. And then you have to wonder, if you "root for the wrong team", will that be looked upon as bad as avoiding the question entirely... or viewed even worse?
Hell, Pascal's Wager is so fucking stupid that in practice it encourages worshiping dark/evil gods or Satan. "If god turns out to be good, he'll forgive me and if I'm right, the dark lord will reward my servitude" vs. "If got turns out to be good, he'll reward my servitude, but if he turns out to be evil...he's really gonna have FUN with me for eternity...."

If there's a God and our belief in him is that important to him, he would have given irrefutable proof of his existence or better yet would regularly keep in touch with his creation. And I don't mean via bullshit anecdotes from grifters on 700 Club. I mean pillar of fire type shit and directly speaking to humanity.

If he's willing to damn people for eternity because they had imperfect understanding of his existence, which he himself guaranteed would be the case from the moment of their birth, then he's not moral, is troll-like in his behavior, and isn't worth trusting anyway. The lack of compassion from the supposedly "all-knowing and omnipresent" being is also very telling.

Pascal's Wager is basically just another bogeyman tactic, but whereas those stories are used to get children to behave or eat their veggies, this one's used to try to scare adults away from using their brains or learning "too much" about other cultures and religions.

It makes sense, but believing in God doesn't necessarily mean you have to believe all the other crazy religion stuff that people have attached to it.
