Never had mice before.

Is it easy enough to just get mousetraps from Home Depot or something and snag it?

I only saw the one and only one real trace of droppings, so I'm hoping it's just one rogue mouse and not a whole family or something.

Its never just one.

snap traps are easy and effective, yeah. i like the bulky plastic ones more than the thin wood ones. bait them with flour or peanut butter.

live catch traps are only slightly less effective. which you want to use depends on how you'd deal with moving either a live mouse or a dead one (and whether you have somewhere to release a live one)

don't use glue traps.

Once I saw a baby mouse in the kitchen sink. Thankfully, it didn't go down to the dark place, so I was able to put it in a bowl and throw it outside.

If it is just some field mouse, don't be an asshole and kill it. Like, a disease-ridden rat, sure. But field mice are cute.

Snaptraps. Then find the entrypoint(s). Then deep clean - they leave urine/poop trails for their friends to follow. Good luck.

That's the most inhumane way to go about it.

Buy several quick kill traps and set them up. Peanut butter works really well. Do a thorough search for poop and where they might be coming in.

Having mice is very stressful. Good luck.

It seems to have come in from the laundry room in the basement, but like I said there's only very minimal signs. No idea how long it's been there.

You really need to find the hole(s) they enter from and plug those, or more will just keep coming. They are relentless.

Had mice at my old house, the rectangular shaped glue traps work wonderfully and you can get a 4 pack for like $3 at Walmart.

Buy some snakes

If theres only one, I recommend a humane trap and to release it outside (away from your house/apartment). Now, if you have a full infestation, your best bet is to buy the green poison logs. Dont bother with snap traps and stuff. Be sure to not put poison where your pets can get it.

This kind of depends on the cat, and how squeamish you are. I had a cat growing up that loved to kill mice and leave them outside in spots for people to find. On the other hand, there was a time a neighbor had a cat start living outside near their house. He looked like Fat Bastard in cat form after a couple of months and nobody near us saw a single mouse for months and months, even outside.

Yeah, don't get complacent here. Killing things is awful and they are cute, but you don't want them in your home.

Make sure to put multiple traps in close proximity to each other. If you just use 1 they can jump over it.

That isn't even going to put a dent in the problem. Your cats might be wonderful hunters, but they can't enter your walls.

Buy copper rodent mesh to plug holes. They dont like chewing on it. I plugged outside holes with it and then used some spray foam to keep in place. With the spray foam you can also see where they are trying to chew in.

One more thing about entrypoints: they only need a hole about the size of a quarter. Almost no hole is too small. They'll squeeze through or make it bigger.
