they just need to be taught empathy. Teach them how their actions effects others and they will know how to behave better around others. No longer will they run in front of cars, mess with strangers, and disrespect teachers. No longer will they steal, litter, or pour bleach in their teacher's coffee mug.

They need discipline that makes sense and is interesting for them. Knowing that good behavior is rewarded and misbehavior has consequences is important. Talking is important, you can't just sit them in front of an ipad or tv.

The world's billionaires and even millionaires are all so sociopaths with no empathy so it's hard to know what direction to lean. Asshole behavior is rewarded with financial success and probably happiness in their eyes, being nice and empathetic has no benefit.

Empathy cannot be an easy thing to teach

They have to see someone be genuinely hurt by something they did and be affected by it

should've grabbed his hand right back and take a chomp on it.

but then one gets in trouble for replicating the action.

Depending on the individual child, I wouldn't go as far and say, that discipline is completely irrelevant. But I generally agree with TC, that empathy is much more important. I was raised that way and became a friendly, humble, helpful and respectful person.

punishment just teachers kids to do bad things without getting caught. Stop them from doing things because it hurts other people, not because they will get punished.

Sounds like "how to raise a brat 101".

Little jimmy continues to punch his sister because mom and dad wont do anything besides say "hey you wouldnt want someone punching you right?"

Naw take his gameboy or put him in timeout.

In the long run - yes, that's correct.

In the short term - you need to teach your child that regardless of how they feel, it's not ok to hurt other people. You don't solve the immediate problem of your child hitting their mother by having a gentle chat about how it hurts her - you do have to quite literally hold them and prevent them from doing it. The empathy chat comes after.

Having kids is not supposed to be easy, if you are not up for it, don't be a parent.
If you're quick to answer everything with your fist, maybe having a child isnt the path for you.

That being said, I agree, that teaching empathy alone , may not be enough.
There is also a huge gap between Teaching a kid empathy, and beating them when they make a mistake.
There is most definitely a middle ground though. A lot of parents won't even try to find it though.

Children must be punished when they are bad, just that there are many more ways to punish a child than getting physical and beating them down.

well aside for the fact that you're 100% wrong

What do you think happens to kids who are beaten when they grow up?

Me and my sister had the same parents but ended up differently. I was taught discipline, i got punishments. My sister however never got in any trouble and was never punished.

I have a house and a family with two children of my own. My sister is in and out of prison constantly because she never learned actions have consequences.

My children are constantly praised in school and among their peers for being leaders and kind to everyone. I discipline my children when they mess up and I reward them when they do well. Turns out they prefer being rewarded and not disciplined.
