I remember reading something about the great purge. Maybe this was it with the videos and pictures being deleted

There are some reruns I watch that are so old that it hardly gets views.

For example, someone posted episodes of the 80s Canadian children's show "Today's Special" that barely get any views on a channel that hasn't uploaded in 12 years.

There is also a local PBS science show from the 70s called "Project Universe." YouTube is the only place to find these episodes because the uploader uploaded them from VHS recordings he made back in the 80s. He hasn't posted anything new since 2008.

Both of these channels would be obliterated.

I guess that means Verne Troyer's channel will be closed. I liked some of his videos.

I hope that note that they aren't going after old Youtube channels (on account of historical relevance) is true, because otherwise this is gonna suck.

On the other hand, perhaps some people will download these videos for archiving purposes.

Way back machine sometimes saves videos and you can watch from there. I found an old mantis shrimp fighting vid through that site (was mantis shrimp vs numerous crustaceans with some trippy music in background). Had the link bookmarked from a couple years ago tho so it wasn't tough to find. Just noticed it was deleted by the user one day. I should go and download in video in case tho lol

It's a funny thing, that despite our capabilities to preserve tremendous amounts of data, we're at risk of losing so much of it. Anthropologists in the future are going to look back at our civilization and find swaths of missing information. In the interest of cost-cutting, we're going to see so many forms of media disappear. Even Imgur is going to wipe out all images that are not tied to an account. I think we're at a point in the digital age where if we really want to preserve things, we need to start printing them out and bind them into a book and store them in a vault.

You assume there will be anthropologists in the future. I imagine humanity isn't long for this world, at the current rate it is going.

Unfortunately, for some videos I made with friends, I don't have much of a choice. One of the friends is the one who had the videos (shot on a KRZR phone, just to date myself); he uploaded them to Youtube and then had his computer crash from getting a virus by using Limewire, so all local copies were lost.

There are extensions that allow you to download Youtube videos.

Everyone saying "Archive", that's fine... but the point isn't the videos you've watched, and seen, it's the potential future ones you're not going to be able to see, as everything gets deleted.
Rare Media/Almost lost media, exists on YouTube, and there's literally nowhere else to find it.
