Probably designed with budget and time restrictions set by the network?

Network shows are ordered to fill a schedule and retain viewers over their run.

Shows on streaming services are designed to be binge watched over a weekend, before moving on to the next thing.

Is that even completely accurate though?

Tons of shows on HBO, Showtime, AMC, etc. have had 10-13 episodes per season for decades.

The old standard was 26 episodes per season to air each episode twice a year. Syndicated shows usually start at 100 episodes to allow for each episode to run twiceish a year aired daily so a lot of networkshows run with that in mind. Premium cable and streaming don't really run on those requirements.

It depends on the timing when the show airs. Like airing from fall to summer will get you 26 episodes but if it was only airing until Christmas then the show will get 13 episodes.

For example Simpsons first season started on December and had 13 episodes. Meanwhile Family Guy frist episode was in January and had 7 episodes.

Network shows are 22 minutes (or 44).

Streaming shows can be full 30/60 minutes

Attention spans are shorter now
