261's problem wasn't that it didn't have karma limits. It was that it was completely incapable of recognizing its behavioral problems and an unwillingness to address them.

Hence why the board has the bad rep that it deservedly earned.

It's a pure fact that people who made the most accounts on that board were rightwingers and/or trolls (usually trolls that may or may not have been pretending to be rightwingers). That's what they described themselves as. And the reason they had to keep making accounts is because they weren't able to not break the ToS while pushing their points.

Lotta sore losers contributed to it too. On multiple gaming boards (and sometimes on CE when I'd pop in) I've seen people that got absolutely DUNKED on 261 cry about how unfair and mean people were towards them while conveniently leaving out or lying about what exactly it was they actually had said/done.

It happened a lot, but almost always they were correct to do so. 9/10 new accounts (and that's me being generous) were alts from shitposters. Basically everyone who got name called or "harassed" (but given the complainers seem to think any kind of pushback is harassment) brought it on themselves by saying/doing absolutely awful shit (that I can't talk about because last time I even vaguely mentioned one of the clear examples I got purg'd for over a week). Similarly the vast majority of people who were called Trumpers were, shockingly, Trump supporters that had backed him in the past.

There was also a weird endemic of very old accounts with very few posts that'd come through and do the same song and dance as the newer definitively troll accounts, but I'm willing to say that might actually have been a solid number of false positives. Even after everything I saw I can't imagine the trolls being pathetic enough to go buy gamefaqs accounts, plus where would they even do it or find sellers anyway?

Imagine the same fucking salesman comes to your house every week but every time he's wearing a new poorly put together disguise. Then multiply that by about 10-20, then imagine that they're not salesman and actually they're really annoying hooligans that shit on the lawn and play obnoxious loud music outside your windows. And when you try and go to the authorities to keep them off your lawn the authorities come by and shrug their shoulders, then complain they get too many calls from you.

That's basically what 261 had to deal with for years (at least since I started using it, which was right before Trump won).

I was wondering what that smell was, and it seems like it was a bunch of gaslighting in regards to the people from 261. I've been reading the thread, and I see a bunch of mouthy sorts selling porkies (telling lies) about how toxic it was. Not so much, save from the occasional bigots and gaslighters who liked to show up there from time only to get kicked out for their foot-in-mouth disease.

From what I remember he was some underaged guy that somehow procured a gun, took a drive to cross state lines with it, and then decided to give himself the authority to defend some random's property. Then he was attacked by some people who were worried about a random guy walking around with a big gun, so he ran and shot some.

That's the entirety of my knowledge. Personally I think he's a complete fucking moron and the only reason those people died is because he brought a gun and that he shouldn't have gone in the first place like a dumbass, but people are dumb panicky animals.

I was never a regular there and never posted there, but I'd find myself lurking here and there when people would bring it up over here.

The problem was that people took that place way too seriously. Every topic seemed like a bunch of angry people arguing. It just felt like a slightly less insane version of like the Switch or PS4 boards.

I only have 37 users on my ignore list and 12 on my blocklist. Things were calm and peaceful for the most part after I blocked the worst users. The board had hundreds of users.

It was mostly a few bad actors. Although no one really stood up to them(Probably the smart thing to do I suppose, since you shouldn't feed the trolls, don't respond to them).
