It's true, but kinda deceptive, as it's actually 2 sandwiches for $29.

They cropped the picture. Zabar's gimmick, if you want to call it that, is that their sandwich bread is twice the size of a "normal" slice of bread, so 2 slices makes the equivalent of 2 "regular sized" sandwiches. So their sandwich is really the size of 2 sandwiches.

The original pic has the "half sandwich" on it for $16, which is the size of a regular sandwich that the average person would make with bread that is "normal" sized.

You can go to Katz Deli(a super big tourist spot) and get a bigger sandwich for the same price.

Considering that photo went viral and even had articles like this one (https://www.grubstreet.com/2023/04/29-dollar-ham-and-cheese-sandwich-nyc.html) written about it, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it's not the norm even for NYC

Zabar said it was actually two sandwiches packed into one wrapper. A single ham and cheese sandwich, cut in half, goes for $16. A double sandwich, meanwhile, costs $29, and is crafted with the intention of sharing, or, as Zabar put it, having one now and then the second sandwich later.
