This isn't new. I was "school avoidant" decades ago. Back then it was called "Being at school is torture and makes me want to kill myself."

I wonder how many of these kids have autism, because I was eventually diagnosed with that.

I didn't have "school avoidance" so much as I just didn't fucking feel like getting up in the morning, lol. Too busy with those all-night phantasy star online and quake 3 arena on dreamcast sessions.

Really though, my video games (even the ones I bought myself because fuck that my parents wasn't about no school avoidance life) being taken away was a pretty good motivator for just getting it over with and going to school.

not only do you get stripped naked and harassed at schoo, it gets filmed and you get slut shamed then you get suspended for trying to defend yourself even when the bully brings a weapon to school.

I actually feel sorry for kids that has to deal with the hell that is public middle school in the modern era. I hated it enough when I was in 7th and 8th grade from 1996 to 1997 so I can't imagine how this same shit is for a era in which every jackass has a phone in their pocket with easily accessible snapshot and recording functions that can be sent to whatever online account on the fly.

I've seen this crisis first-hand. Covid really did jump start this wave.

It was a few days avoidance at first, then weeks, then no school at all. The student was moved to an independent study facility. But it gets worse. The student eventually withdrew from family. Except for bathroom usage, they never leave their room even when guests or a party is going on in the same house.

Any sort of real push from parents result in a complete mental breakdown from the kid.

Teachers are treated as free babysitters as well and aren't allowed to actually teach. I feel like that is a part of the problem as well. Even in terms of disciplinary measures, you have people on this site saying students should be allowed to be on phones during class and teachers shouldn't confiscate phones etc.

With me it wasn't even bullying that made me hate school. I just couldn't communicate with people, and being around tons of people all day was literally painful. High school was the worst. I was put on disability right after I left high school, because by then it was clear that this wasn't something I was gonna grow out of.

I wasn't bullied much though. In grade school I was, but by high school I think everyone just felt sorry for me.

I mean, I cant really blame them. Aside from the social aspect, early education is practically useless. I think a lot about how much I learned in elementary - high school really just does not matter for real life.

And they make it out to be so important which creates stress, which makes it unappealing.

Not to mention all the dangers that the media is glorifying now as well.

Dude, I said a lot, not everything.

But Im not surprised that someone tried to twist that the way you did, either to be petty or to make up some kind of gotcha! when obviously I implied that the basic stuff like that is still important.

there's a lot of "basic numeracy" that is genuinely useless, such as this:

I teach primary. About 80% of the focus is on those things. Im not twisting your words, Im just taking them as you said them and asking if thats what you really mean.

Your first and second points dont really apply to any school Ive ever taught in. For your third, I agree, more reading would be a good thing.
