The stated aim of said legislation is to protect minors from inappropriate content, but I can't help thinking the real reason is further mass surveillance and control private behaviors, along with a desire to appear to have accomplished something amidst soaring food and housing prices and a general lack of effectiveness of lawmakers. Most folks on Reddit seem to be opposed and see this as an attack on freedom of speech, the free internet, and an attempt at enforcing Christian morals. On a major tech news site, most of the comments on a recent news article were in favor, stating that parents need these tools and that it is the responsibility of the tech companies to provide them. Don't want your kids looking at porn? Use parental controls, keep your PC in an open area and/or give your kid a dumb-phone. The sites that didn't just block usage in this state ask for ID verification and they do it through some third party company. Why would I trust that?
