Florida education officials allegedly told a school teacher that she was under a misconduct investigation after, her friend claimed, she showed students the Disney animated film Strange World.

The purported investigation following this alleged showing of Strange World comes amid rightwing Republican governor Ron DeSantiss attacks on educators that include book censorship and limitations on discussions of race and sex as he jockeys for his partys presidential nomination with anti-woke talking points.

The film involves a group of explorers who try saving a mysterious land from losing its vital energy source, per Variety. It also has a prominent gay character a rarity in childrens animation.

Zee included a photo of a letter from the Florida department of education, stating that following receipt of a receipt of a complaint, this office has determined an investigation is warranted into allegations that you engaged in inappropriate conduct.

If you have evidentiary witnesses or documents pertinent to the case, send them to this office no later than two weeks from receipt of this letter, the alleged missive continues. CBR.com first reported on Zees Tweet.

The alleged letter does not state specific allegations against this teacher. The Florida department of education did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In response to a Twitter user who said that teachers who break the law find themselves under investigation, Zee wrote: She has signed permission from every parent in the classroom to show Disney & Dreamworks movies in class, even offering lines to specify specific movies parents didnt want shown. Not one exception was written down, so no she didnt break the law. Try again, doofus.

Why choose that movie?

Because it really shouldn't be that big of a deal? We had days especially near the end of the school year where it'd be like an in-service. I watched Tombstone in high school, gratuitous sex scenes were covered and fast forwarded over.

I'm pretty sure none of that is in a Disney film so it shouldn't be that big of a fucking deal.

I still like how in HS we got to see the original Red Dawn without anything getting covered up. You'd think the part where the teacher and kids got shot up by an RPK in a school would be a red flag. But no, we tuff I guess.

Nowadays that'd probably be a training video on what to avoid doing.

Remember when conservatives made the "don't groom our kids" argument? What they really meant was don't ever mention that gay people exist otherwise the state will send their Schutzstaffel to address it.

Maybe because it's a new movie that the kids are unlikely to have seen, and it's on Disney plus, and maybe the teacher just likes the movie and thought the kids would enjoy it. What does it matter? Why not?

That still doesnt validate the statement.

Obviously I dont think teachers showing a mediocre Disney movie that happens to have gay people in it is infringing on any parents rights, but who do you think you are winning over with a statement like that?

Just because social media is pervasive doesnt mean the parents lose their rights concerning what goes on in public schools.

bruh this is florida. they dont even want to teach slavery and civil rights anymore

so its cool to have main character go on a alcohol induced hallucination trip (dumbo) or have the main characters parents die on screen(bambi and lion king) or a clergy man be conflicted with his piousness and sexual desires(hunchback, which interestingly enough a lot of parents didnt think was kid appriopriate on release) but having a character be gay and exist is crossing the line

The teacher explained it had elements that were part of the lesson they were learning at the time.

Also, all the parents signed permissions slips to show PG movies, and none of them said what they weren't okay with their kids watching.

Yea I was genuinely confused when they were bringing up very niche / hidden stuff in Disney films that was from... awhile ago and has since been edited out of any streaming or new releases of said media.

Also the whole point of the Pinocchio scene with the "bad boys" is to basically frighten kids into not doing those things... Yea it looks really cool until you get turned into a donkey and you're screaming for your mother.

Some really weird thought processes regarding the conservatives that frequent this website.

I didn't say it validated, but the full statement definitely paints a different picture of the teacher and what she was trying to say - many of the replies to this tweet are going exactly off that (how dare teachers think they know what's better for my kid etc)

Obviously I dont think teachers showing a mediocre Disney movie that happens to have gay people in it is infringing on any parents rights, but who do you think you are winning over with a statement like that?

It really wasn't obvious, as your first post was dismissive of the movie (seemed to minimize the issue) and then critical of the teacher's response - you didn't saying anything about the event or the bill.

Just because social media is pervasive doesnt mean the parents lose their rights concerning what goes on in public schools.

Where did she say anything about "social media"? She was saying kids are already talking about these issues, so parents rights to forbid them from being exposed in school are already moot.

B) I never said any of those things were "cool"?
C) Parents dying and death can be appropriate topics for a children's movie, are you saying they should never be portrayed?
