By official rules? Like 1d4. Improvised weaponry has always sucked in d&d:
From Improvised Weapons:
If a character uses a ranged weapon to make a melee attack, or throws a melee weapon that does not have the thrown property, it also deals 1d4 damage. An improvised thrown weapon has a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet.

If your DM is good, the bard will either get an inspiration from the DM, or he'll have the target hit roll to be stunned for a round from the sheer audacity of being hit by a thrown instrument.
