He comes from a time where music (especially folk music) was on the come up. Right around the prime time of an old music festival known as "Woodstock". He played quite a few venues in that time (and a few more since then), and has written several songs and has released several albums.

But that was a long time ago.

So, the question is, is he considered to be (or to have been) a "popular" or well known singer/song writer by todays standards?

Have you heard of him or any of the songs he is associated with?

Does his name surpass that of his son Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers?

No, he's pretty obscure, in fact who is Bob Dylan? I'm pretty sure you just made him up.

A good rule of thumb is that if I've heard of someone (and they don't predominantly sing in another language besides English), everyone has heard of them. Doesn't hold 100% true of course, but it's a fairly safe bet; I seem to be really good at not knowing even many well-known artists.

And yes, I have heard of Bob Dylan.

As long as weed, high school, and college stoner kids exists, Dylan is immortal.

He's not at all in the level of MJ, Elvis, The Beatles, etc.

I wouldn't even say he's in the level of Queen, Elton John, Metallica, etc. Being artists who have remained relevant through generations especially in pop culture.

Probably on a third level where he's widely known by his generation, and people who just like his music. Edit.. or people who have just heard of him.. Which consistently dwindles by generation.. as with all of them. Kinda talking out my ass.

I notice him for his sense of style. He has that signature avant-garde/alternative look that's a balance between rock, folk, and high couture. Looking at a picture of his younger days, you would never presume him to be a folk singer. Those sun glasses and unkept curly hair make him look more of a fashion icon.

Dylan's cover of All Along the Watchtower was pretty lame TBQH.

He's the kind of name that you know who he is by name recognition alone, but unless you actively followed him you wouldn't be able to pick him out in a crowd.

I've seen him live twice. It was amazing both times.

I feel like he was relatively unknown until the lead singer of the Traveling Wilburys picked him up (Roy Oberson or Boy George Harrison, can't remember which).

If you're a metal head, I can see that. To them, Dylan folk songs would be like the furthest thing from their world, and preference. While Metallica would be like Gods.

I've seen him referenced in multiple anime. A Western musician getting referenced in Japanese media automatically qualifies as well-known.

It depends. My parents don't know who the fuck Dylan, Metallica, or even the Rolling Stones are, but they do know the Beatles, and Michael Jackson.

Born in the 40's. They're very familiar. It's just that in Korea, Beatles music are used everywhere. Cafes, tv shows, etc. Never heard one Rolling Stones, or Dylan songs ever used. They know Bette Davis, Tom Jones, Elvis, Paul Anka, Sinatra, The Monkees, and so on.

Bob Dylan is an indisputable household name.

Record sales aren't everything. Dude has a Nobel Prize and has written songs for many other successful artists. He's definitely a bigger influence than Metallica.

Nah, obviously the best way to gauge an artist's influence, cultural significance, and general artistic / spiritual merit is through cold, hard numbers.

I remember some angry guy use Bob's name saying he walked him up on stage in 1975 as he was yelling at some other guy for playing a musical instrument in public
