I don't really like the constant loot system in general but still feel like I should give either Diablo 2 or 4 a chance since I hear a lot of people don't like 3 for some reason

Three was designed from the ground up to drive you towards the cash auction house so that blizzard could make a percentage off every transaction. Its very game design is scuffed to the core, and while they eventually spent a lot of time improving it, there's only so much you can recover from.

3 got panned for the simplified leveling system.

There was also a whole bunch of bullshit at launch but D3 got a lot better with time.

Diablo 1 and 2 were pretty dark in tone, the art style mostly.

Diablo 3 just looked cartoony and the voice acting was god awful, so bad it felt like they were parodying Diablo rather than being serious.

because it was balanced around the real money AH when it came out

just play the 2 remaster

Even if I didn't like the loot system in 3? I just don't like the constant barrage of loot in general, I can't remember if it was as bad or not in the original as I haven't played that in 15 years

D2 was the opposite, you hardly ever get anything good

Don't even do this

The story is incredibly stupid. You spend most of the game helping the return of Diablo and they take Leah while you're "sleeping" in a act change.

D3 went from balanced around trade and AH to arcade loot explosion game. It went from one extreme to another so there are a lot of complaints either way.

Just wait for D4.

Yeah D3 addressed this but it was like going from one extreme to another >____>
You'd get this really kickass looking legendary but oh wait it sucks compared to this mild rare sword that has >200dmg more than the legendary weapon you found. So who fucking cares what you acquire, chances are high you'll just come across a new thing that's rarer or better.

Whole game is based around looting and grinding, nothing at all to do with the RPG character trees, progression, or story like the previous Blizzard games. Art style is so vanilla too. Zero personality or substance there.

Hot take but it's hard for me to go back to 1 and 2. With 3 I can just switch off my brain, slam down some beers and mow down demons with my Barbarian. I love how enemies ragdoll all over the place as your wreck them. I just have no patience for 1 or 2 anymore. 3 I can still gel with. Worth noting though that I got into it years late, after the expansion came out.

eh, in D3 you just gotta think of most of the legendaries as souls anyway. they just don't drop as crafting materials like the others

2 is amazing

The remaster of Diablo 2 is honestly one of the best remasters I've ever played.

It got better, but the "fuck that loser" era was a lowpoint for the main games.

I like 3

It got dumbed down for a more casual audience.

Act 2 is basically one giant fetch quest with a very unsatisfying climax.

I don't really remember much about D2, but wasn't there at least two acts dedicated to fetching pieces of a staff to put togther?

I can think of a few things:

The cartoony art style doesn't really fit the Diablo franchise well.

The bosses talked too much and there wasn't anything scary about them. The atmosphere of Diablo 1 and 2 was incredible. I felt constant tension when playing them. That was completely lost in Diablo 3.

The story was mediocre in my opinion and it became too "large scale" for my taste. Diablo 1 and 2 were better in that regard. I particularly loved the simpler setting of Diablo 1.

Gameplay-wise Diablo 3 was clearly designed as a grindfest instead of that being a byproduct of the actual game.

This is really subjective but I prefer the difficulty settings of Diablo 2. Implementing 200 different difficulties feels pointless to me. Sometimes less is better.
