Yeah. In grade school, I'm sure like most other people, I was taught that they "hated" eachother and I'm pretty certain this interview was the basis for that.

It wasn't the government that lied (this time lol). It was Playboy and Alex Haley.

I don't recall being taught that, just that they competed for followers with opposing ideologies.

What I do remember though is being taught Malcolm X was pro violence which is not true. He believed in violence as a necessity but he was always willing to try the peaceful approach first. He just also believed in packing just in case that didn't work out.

And TBH... Depending on where you lived in America, Malcolm was probably more right than MLK Jr.

Like, you just weren't going to nonviolently protest your way out of this:

They weren't best friends who disagreed on ideologies until their differences came to a head leading them to form their own team each? Was X-Men all a lie too??

Yeah. I was never taught MLK and Malcolm X hated each other, just that they had opposing philosophies and MLK was the "right" one. Most people's understanding of the two boils down to Malcolm X being pro violence and MLK being pro peace, frequently giving a "good guy vs bad guy" narrative.
