Christianity teaches that that's why Jesus died on the cross to forgive you for your sins. So when Christians tell you you're going to go to hell for that, they just want you to convert to Christianity because that's what's supposed to clear your slate. Inversely the true is taught in Christianity, lack of bad works don't get you into hell (because all it takes is one). The guy on the plane is making a point of saying the only important part is "giving their hearts to Christ".
