Take a look at the event horizons of the two largest ones we know of, compared to the orbit of Neptune inside:

For comparison, here's the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, where its event horizon is smaller than Mercury's orbit:

Theyre invisible to the naked eye, but they give off a ton of evidence of their existence due to their influence on nearby objects. Theyre fairly easy to detect.

Interestingly enough, all black holes are technically the same size as they are just their infinitely small singularity. The event horizons are what can vary vastly in terms of apparent size, as the more mass that you cram into their singularity, the larger the region of space happens to be that light cannot escape.

Counterintuitively, for a supermassive black hole, if you fell into it you a) wouldn't be able to tell when you pass the event horizon and b) wouldn't even feel much until the last microsecond before reaching the singularity, at which point things would go nightmarishly bad for you. *

https://youtu.be/4rTv9wvvat8

* assuming that the radiation and friction of the accretion disk didn't kill you first, I mean, which it totally would.

Right?

Say some black holes gain mass by devouring stars and stuff. If 2 black holes get close, they orbit each other before merging. As they spiral together, they expend energy emitting gravitational waves. Then, the resulting merged black hole is lighter than the two originals. What the hell is mass and energy!

Black holes really aren't that scary. Some of them are big as fuck, yeah, but for all intensive purposes (haha) they're just like any other star with appropriate gravitational force equivalent to their mass. We're not gonna get sucked into a black hole anymore than we're gonna get sucked into Betelgeuse. Probably less than that depending on the exact stellar neighbourhood.

There's something very scary about crossing the event horizon. I think it's because it's so dark and you can't see anything other than the light around the edges. It's creepy.

no they are not. there is an accretion disc around a black hole as light and stuff "orbits" around it.
