Even as a budget game compared to NMH 1 and 2?

I actually sort of liked 1 and 2 as budget titles back during the Wii drought. 2 especially felt outright good because it removed the crappy overworld and minigames that really plagued the first game, so you dove straight into the beam katana gameplay and super moves which was pretty fun.

I was gonna get NMH 3 for Switch but hesitated after hearing about bad reviews and performance issues. So I thought I'd wait for NMH 3 on ps4 but then still got bad reviews and it seemed the game itself was bad, not just a hardware issue. And losing the wiimote waggle + jank means it's just jank without even waggle to make it hilarious. So I usually know what I'm getting into with suda51 games

This was the most confusing part of 3 to me. The open world stuff in 1 was intentionally bad, yet the fanbase begged for it to come back. Now, instead of fighting his way through various levels like in 2, Travis just fights his way through loading screens as he repeatedly teleports to these samey-looking alien spaceships for every fight. The core gameplay is still fun, but the game just doesnt thrill like it used to.

The random aliens weren't nearly as entertaining as the assassins.
1 and 2 were zany, this one's gone full blown random. Left field stuff is Suda 51's thing so I'm not feeling particularly surprised or let down. It almost feels like slightly tweaked character models being reused for a different game.
Coulda done without whatever they did to Henry though

Someone I know uses "This character belongs in NMH3." as a way of saying they're bland, which I think is funny.

NMH3 was great, the only thing you should know is that it's not a sequel to 2; it's a sequel to Travis Strikes Again. I would not recommend playing 3 before TSA but TSA kicked all kinds of ass so that's not a problem.

This I did not know. Travis Strikes Again? There was an interim game before 2 and 3? I was wondering why there was over a 10 year gap between releases seemed odd.

I really didn't like NMH3. They stripped out all the levels so it's just nothing but random cage matches everywhere, the overworld is somehow even worse than 1's, and Shinobu and Bat Girl literally don't do dick in the story despite the latter being built up in TSA. The combat is great but man, there's a serious lack in charm in a lot of places.

Yeah, unlike the first 2 games that was talked about a whole lot, NMH3 was really the game that just kind of came and went. It got decent reviews and the gameplay is the same kind of Jank you expect from Suda 51 games, but it also had some strange decisions like bringing back the open world that not only performs terribly, but also empty and bland as the first game. Also, Aliens aren't nearly as fun of bosses as killing Assasins imo, but I know there's a lot of people that disagree with my on this. Also the story kind of takes it to a weird direction, but I think he's doing this because Suda has strong belief that he will be able to make more sequels.

I think the issue is NMH3 lost a lot of its "shock value" from the first 2 games that it got when it was released on the Wii because of its lack of "mature" games. So while it still has its fanbase, I don't think it will grow out more than being niche, unless Travis Touchdown somehow makes it to the next Smash game.

I dont mean to derail the thread, but Id forgotten how much of a gut punch it was when he was confirmed to not be playable. The stars were all aligned: we knew Suda wanted him in, he just got a spin-off and a new, long-awaited sequel, but no luck.

Dude, when Sakurai had his 3 fingers up as a teaser for the next Smash character, most people I know in real life and in some online communities I was in was saying it was going to be PG or PG-13 Travis Touchdown for NMH3. Oh boy, I don't think anyone would've guessed it meant 3 Houses lol.

I've never met these people who prefer the aliens.
I wonder what else they think?
I don't want to find out.

It's not a bad game, but I suppose it's a bit disappointing? Compared to NMH1 and 2 which had very established/polished artstyles, NMH3 looks hilariously amateur-ish, and on the Switch its open world performance was pretty bad. It's got a fairly consistent 60fps where it counts though: in the combat. The combat's probably the best it's been in an NMH game but they also pretty much eliminated the "action stage" part of the gameplay where it's essentially only fight after fight with some cutscenes mixed in before the boss.

It had its moments, but as someone that absolutely loved 1 and 2, yeah, it was disappointing.

The aliens kinda sucked, most of them were just weirdly designed to the point of being completely unmemorable. Only Fuu and Sonic Juice stood out in the personality department. ...and I guess Gold Joe too, but fuck he was awful. Even the generic enemies sucked, I miss the shittalking the regular mooks did in the first two games.

The first two games were insane, but this game just takes it way too far IMO. Travis played a videogame when he was young, meaning he can randomly resurrect after being chopped into pieces and buried? Lots of just... stupid, Family Guy tier meme shit.

They really didn't do a lot of the returning characters justice (and what the FUCK happened to my girl Bad Girl's voice?), the open world sucks even harder than in the first game and the framerate is just awful (though this might just be an issue in the Switch version), a bunch of filler mini fights instead of actual levels, the more realistic artstyle looked pretty bad, the OST generally wasn't very memorable, etc...

Most of the boss fights were good at least, the combat in general was neat, and it did have some amusing scenes if nothing else. But yeah, in the end, it was a pretty big disappointment to me.

Oh, yeah, this should absolutely be taken into account. Tons of shit happen in TSA and its DLC that are important in 3.

How is TSA? Been skimming gameplay footage and... it's a top down brawler? I don't mind top down, if the game is still fun and has both the nostalgically juvenile humor present in 1+2 as well as the genuinely funny humor.

Yeah that TSA stuff THREW me off so bad. I thought that was a non canon spinoff game so I never played it based on complaints. Ill prob buy it on ps4 for 8$ next time it drops to that price. But it was like going from Crank to Crank High Voltage in terms of weirdness.

Anyway, original point. The game is fun if you are not picky and enjoy the first two. I will admit tho that Suda should find a balance between intenional mainstream hate and the mainstream. Because some of the "its on purpose" stuff got pretty tiring. Oh and the difficulty spikes after the 3rd or 4th boss I think. Went from "this game is too easy" to Dark Souls real quick. I paid 25USD for it so Id say thats a good price if not less.
