They just want it to carry the tone of the original trilogy or even the prequel trilogy. A lot of people have found new appreciation for the prequels not because they're great stories even but they still carry the Star Wars tone that George Lucas sets. Disney Star Wars is so far removed from the Star Wars feel and that is why people are so torn on it. I would say there's dozens if not hundreds of extended universe content they could have pulled from. They could have polled the Star Wars community to see which stories were the strongest and adapted the must popular works. There's already so many great stories about terrifying sith lords. Stupendous Wave does some great videos on it.
