WrkHrdPlayHrdr 05/08/23 2:12:31 PM #1:	Spoilers for ALL games in the series. Been playing Metal Gear games since MGS1 on the PS1. The lore has always been super complicated but I think I have a handle on most of it. There's one thing that is confusing to me right now and I realized it when I started MGS5 again over the weekend... The medic becomes the "phantom" of Big Boss. I'm assuming while he was in a coma they did surgery to make him look like Big Boss. What confuses me though is the whole part where you are told they are going to do surgery on you to make you not look like Big Boss anymore (the character thinks they are Big Boss.) You have to pick out a face and after you pick out a face Quiet sneaks in and kills the nurse and doctor. Lore wise, what was the point of telling Venom Snake that they were about to do facial surgery on him? If Quiet wouldn't have come in would they have done the surgery the next day or something? I don't get it. The "face" you create was your character's face before the surgery. The entire opening cutscene is unreliable because your character is completely mentally shattered and brainwashed. The Doctor was likely in on the surgery and lying to you about the scheduled surgery or never actually said the lines you hear in the first mission. Why it was demonstrated that way? Solely as a misdirection to confuse the player and in order to create a metanarrative about Snake and the player for some 3deep5me commentary. MGSV is arguably the weakest in the series when it comes to story due to things like this. Gwynevere 05/08/23 2:36:45 PM #7:	Actually, I just rewatched this scene; it seems like what's happening here is that medic has been successfully brainwashed by this point into thinking he has always been Big Boss, and that they're going to alter his appearance to protect him from people trying to kill him. That would resolve any conflict through memories surfacing from before the brainwashing, by explaining it away as what the medic would look like after the surgery. I don't know if they ever intended to actually go through with it, or if Quiet's appearance was staged to kick medic into gear of now acting as Big Boss The entire thing is also told through the lens of an unreliable narrator. Snippets of the truth come through at various points in the game before the big reveal, which is why Venom isn't in super shock when he hears the tape. I'm not too keen on their video I love the effort but they just kinda go "See this minor inconsistency? That's actually proof of brainwashing" and they spend 10 minutes on each inconsistency just repeating it over and over. I mean sometimes they're taking quotes from websites or interviews hyping the game to find inconsistencies. Feels abit "Indoctrination Theory"esq too me. The face you Pick is for Online, but storywise it's what the Medic looked like before the surgery. I took it as he was told at one point he was going to get plastic surgery (to make him look like Big Boss) but his memory is fucked with (brainwashing and drugs) and so you recall that part in a weird way- You're recalling a conversation from the past, but in the present. I'm wondering how they made my character look white though. I deliberately made my character look as much like Samuel L Jackson as I could.
