My dog's been laying in the sun for the past 30 minutes. Are dogs smart enough to move to the shade and/or drink water on their own if they're overheating? She got up once I went to pet her. Otherwise, she was just chilling in the sun panting. Told her to drink some water in the shade and now she's in the sun again.

Panting is hows dogs cool off, if she isn't panting she's fine, even if she is it's not a big deal if she isn't racing or doing some kind of job.

Should I move her inside even if she stays in the shade? It's 88 degrees today. Lol she finally chose to lay in the shade.

My husky mix will sunbathe in 110+ for over an hour at a time in the summer. Pool, shade, drinking water, and able to go indoors whenever. Whenever he gets hot he figures somethin out.

My uncle had hunting dogs he kept in cages, they would dig underneath their doghouse to keep cool.

Of course, as long as they're provided shade, water, a way to get in.

As for whether you should move your pooch, that depends on her breed. She'll let you know when she wants to come in.
