Bro it was hell. I didn't know why I couldn't stop farting, and of course the person loudly calling attention to it was never "being disruptive". Nor was it "disruptive" when the same teacher who kept writing me up for it had his email alert set to a loud fart sound when I came back from ISS and used it to embarrass me further.

Okay sorry yeah if it felt traumatic then I guess it's trauma. It just sounded a bit funny to me. I got a lot of detentions that I felt were unfair too but I guess this teacher was kind of bullying you which can be scarring.

But I don't see that as what's happening in this video. All my friends who are teachers say the phone situation is out of control. My sister who is one spends more time trying to get kids to behave and pay attention then actually teach, which sucks because she's really passionate about english and history and would run an awesome class with kids who aren't brats. She's soft spoken and in her mid 20s so the kids give her no respect

It became physical when unwanted physical contact was made.

And what reality do you live in? If the parents don't put their kid through school they can face criminal charges and the kid can be taken by the state and placed in foster care. You HAVE to put your kids through schooling. This means you HAVE to agree to a school's policies.

Or you can pay money you don't have to go to a private school or out of districtc and hope for other policies (like I dunno, a don't fuckin lay hands on a kid unless it's to prevent physical harm policy, not just because they refused to hand over their phone). Or you can quit your job and home school them but woops now there's no food to eat.

This is a really weird hill to die on and I hope you realize how much youre embarrassing yourself for defending assaulting a teacher.

Or, goodness willing, this is an act to get attention, in which case, nice job.

Also the whole "Just give them an instant fail if they use their phone but don't confiscate it" can fly for university and college, but these are still kids in school. They're not fully developed adults yet. You can't just give up on them that easy, you have take on a bit more of a parental like role

Not after unwanted physical contact was retaliated to.
Students don't have the right to retaliate to consequences for their behavior. The students are 100% in the wrong and you have failed to provide literally any evidence that the teacher has assaulted a student. Your argument is fundamentally flawed because the confiscation of a device is not an assault.
You probably think it's illegal imprisonment when a misbehaving kid is grounded against their will.

And the fact the confiscation of a device is an acceptable middle step before involving the principle and parents and removing them entirely from the class like what Grem thinks should be step 1 and the perfect solution to all problems.

Fail for that test, not the class. Send them to the office. Look into failing the class if it's repeat behavior otherwise offer an opportunity to take a makeup test.

Neverminding of course that the classes I learned the most from did open note tests instead of rote memorization.

This. So many kids need to be flunked based on their behavior.

I remember I went to a school once where I made all As in class but got Bs at report card time because of behavior. More schools should have that policy.

I think people underestimate just how bad the issue with cell phone usage during instructional time is with students, unless you work in a school setting you wouldn't understand. This is my first year teaching (7th) and these kids can't function without their phones.

It's so annoying when kids zone out on what you are saying within 30 secs and are on their phone browsing TikTok. I'd bet 1k this teacher told her multiple times to put the phone away before confiscating it.

There should be rules and expectations for students to follow, and if they don't then there should be consequences (shocking, I know). If a student can't be bothered enough to listen for 5 minutes or complete their assignments and would rather play on their phone then it should be confiscated until the end of class, if they can't handle that then call security (if they show up in a timely matter) and turn it over to the office.

i couldn't agree more -- you'd hope and expect a teacher to be able to solve a problem like that without relying on being physical in any way with anyone. they should have the means. and by that, i mean the structure should have answers for them. i think the opposite - even tacitly encouraging this as a resolution - puts teachers in the way of harm and students in the way of abuse.

In the Reddit thread it says that teachers can lose their jobs if they fail too many students. Also, this teacher has been punched before for doing the same thing? These are just the top comments, and I expect to learn more as I go.

Nope. Confiscation is an acceptable first action during an exam.

During a normal lesson, the teacher would or should warn them first then confiscate the phone after the student disobeys.

Nope. Confiscation is an acceptable first action during an exam.

well, that's part of the issue, then. i'm saying give the teachers more non-physical answers. are you really leaving the enforcement of the policy up to whether or not your teacher can overpower a student for their property?

like, again, it's not even just about the student or the teacher, here. both stand to be hurt because answers are apparently thin.

Teachers are completely fucked due to the decay of social norms. Kids really do not care in the slightest, because their parents won't care in the slightest, and there isn't a wider sense of community to care.
