https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/may/02/anti-monarchists-receive-intimidatory-home-office-letter-on-new-protest-laws-coronation

  • Protesters who block roads, airports and railways could face 12 months behind bars.
  • Anyone locking on to others, objects or buildings could go to prison for six months and face an unlimited fine.
  • Police will be able to head off disruption by stopping and searching protesters if they suspect they are setting out to cause chaos.

Its worrying to see the police handed so many new powers to restrict protest, especially before a major national event. When the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act came into force, the police repeatedly misused them in part because they simply did not understand them. Similarly, when Queen Elizabeth died, we saw police acting in inappropriate and heavy-handed ways towards protesters that violated their rights.

Some key points from the article. Now, you cannot protest in ANY disruptive manner, block ANYONE in any manner, link arms with one another or even just be in the fucking vicinity of somewhere a protest MIGHT happen.

Yes. The police can detain you, without evidence, if they believe you might be 'causing a nuisance' or a protest might happen. They dont need evidence, but simply need to think it.

At this point, Britain has hit every single 'fascist' point in the 'going into fascism' bullet point list and shows no signs of slowing down.

And if this is meant to stop all the peaceful protest, why should they not just follow the French and burn it all down if they will face years of jail anyway?

Fuck the evil calling themselves Tories and fuck any Labour or Lib Dem who doesn't utterly condemn this.

sad that this is happening. I wonder if it will lead to new efforts from Scotland to leave. This sucks. I was hoping the UK would stay free in case the US falls to fascism. Canada would probably not be safe, being right next door. The US would likely invade them

The UK would have been a nice refuge to escape to

Depends on the situation. I agree they should not block emergency vehicles. But unless they cause some injury or death, 12 months is kinda crazy

You can join the list of evil people who can go fuck themselves as well then.

Disruptive protest is how we have basically ANY rights. Protest you can ignore is just that. Ignorable.

Protest has to be disruptive and annoying or bloody. Very little else works.

Also, for those like Neon and Vy whining about disruptive protest you do realise you both only have the rights you do due to the type of protest you are bitching about, right?

Workers rights? Violent and disruptive protests
Women's rights? Violent and disruptive protests
LGBTQ+ rights? You guessed it.

Violent and disruptive protests.

You and everyone around you only get to enjoy what you do because someone else violently and annoyingly told corporations and the government to go fuck themselves.

This is essentially a list of the effective methods of protest.

Disruption is essential for any meaningful change. By opposing disruption, you are advocating for society to freeze in place. Even if you don't think of yourself as conservative, that's extremely conservative in practice.

You're ignoring that half the people with guns will support whatever oppressive action the government takes or take part in it themselves if it owns the libs. The people fantasizing about confronting an oppressive government with guns are the same people who cheer laws allowing randos to be able to run over protesters and cheered Trump having unlabeled federal agents black bag protestors in 2020.

Any actual violent uprising of oppressed or marginalized people in America has always been put down with state or private violence that was cheered by the majority. From slaves, to Black Panthers, to suffragists, to LGBT liberation groups, Americans HATE violent resistance to oppression and LOVE order.

I don't think either of them have any knowledge of the history of any of those movements. It's literally impossible to study any civil rights movement and not see that it's never as simple as kindly asking for your rights.

The US government literally dropped bombs on striking coal miners in their fight for better working conditions. The black panthers were absolutely instrumental in the push for civil rights for African Americans. The stonewall riots were the birthplace of pride.

Acting like protests are detrimental to your cause is ignorant at best.
