It's weird how 50 Shades of Grey is universally panned in the kink/BDSM community for basically glorifying sexual assault, but Secretary is every perverts favourite movie and sexual awakening despite having exactly the same problems. Why is that?

I remember channel surfing with a friend and stumbled on the spanking scene.

Secretary did come out first and isn't based on Twilight fan fiction so it had that going for it.

I think one difference is that in Secretary both the boss and her gradually discover and get turned on by their power dynamic that's constantly escalating while in 50 Shades the guy is already into BDSM and starts off by making her sign a non-disclosure contract.

No, it literally is Twilight fanfiction. Christian Grey was Edward, Anastasia Steele was Bella. The author just changed the names to publish it.

You can tell a little bit. They mirrored the scene where Edward stops a car from hitting Bella, but it's just Christian stopping a bike messenger from hitting Anastasia. It's subsequently hilarious because it's still treated like she was nearly run down by a car.

Ive never heard of the former, and Ive only heard jokes about, but never seen, the latter.

Because literally no one has heard of secretary which is borderline an independent film. While 50 shades shattered records.

Hell most only found out about the movie after 2008's the dark knight when internet dudes were calling Maggie Gyllenhaal uglier than Katie Holmes and looking like a turtle and people would reference this movie where she was hot for once.

What's funny is that 50 shades apparently has nudity but it's still not hot. Secretary has no nudity and is somehow way hotter.

I suspect another reason is that the boss in Secretary is a likeable figure. He's flawed, and shows remorse for his behaviour, and a genuine desire to be kind. But the guy in 50 shades is just creepy from the get-go and is never given a reprieve. He shows no self-awareness.

And I've been noticing a trend with female authors and their female protagonists' names. Anastasia Steele? Really? Same with like, Katniss everdeen. Just seems... overly flowery. Like something youd see in those pulp books. Penny dreadful.

One movie is a very charming, pretty funny, and smartly written unconventional romcom with excellent actors.

The other one is 50 Shades of Grey.

How is it that people still do not know FSOG was literally Twilight fan fiction, it was not something that was hidden or not talked about.

Based on the excerpts I've read, the writing quality is exactly what you'd expect out of fanfic as well.

People always seem to cite George Lucas or Ringo Starr as being the luckiest motherfuckers in the entertainment industry. E.L. James beats them both by lightyears.
