Every year, sometimes twice a year, some guys I know run a small video game tournament out of someone's garage. Usually about 32 people come and play games. We call it a "fest". Each fest games are selected and brackets are created to do some head to head matches and people are seeded based on past performance. Points are given for 1st through 10th place and at the end of the night most points wins the championship. The last few years some local papers have written articles about it.

We do raffles to make money. People make bets with each other like "for every overall standing point I score above you I'll donate 5 bucks." And this year people started getting sponsors. Some got sponsored by their work and their work will donate X dollars for every standing point. Some got a flat fee donation sponsor.

We also got donated some food this year for the first time. I think our soda was donated and you know those little cupcakes that come in like 4 pieces a package? Blueberry and chocolate and stuff? We got like 150 BOXES donated. It was crazy.

This year was a "sports themed" fest. Not my favorite but it was still fun. The games were:
Baseball Stars 3 inning games, head to head. Single elim.
Blades of Steel 2 Periods, head to head. Final was a full game. Single elim.
Tecmo Bowl 2 quarters, head to head. Final was a full game. Single elim.
Mario Kart 8 Time Trials on a course, 2 runs, 16 best times on a course move on to 4P circuits. Winners of those move on. The time trial course was Yoshi's Circuit. Fastest time was 2:03.
Wii Sports Bowling - 4 player games. Bowl 2 games, highest combined scores win.
Wii Sports Golf- Play three holes in a foursome. Write down overall score and a cutoff line was drawn. If you're in the cutoff you then played 6 holes.
Wii Sports Homerun Derby - 2 attempts. Highest combined total.
Towerfall - 4 Players, Last Man Standing. Top 2 from each game move on until you get to the finals.

This is the first year where we had to cut games due to it running long. It tends to end around midnight or a little later. Sometimes a little earlier. I blame Wii Sports Golf because it took forever.

Mario Tennis Aces
NBA Jam TE

I'm not involved in the setup or anything. I just go to play. So I'm not trying to take credit for running it or anything like that. I've been going since the 6th one.

It started of with a group of friends who used to game in someoens basement on some weekends and liked shit talking. It evolved into what it is with 32 players. You could find a group of friends and get one started! The toughest thing is finding a place to host it. We are fortunate enough one of the guys has a decent sized yard and garage for us to park and play in.
